Coach Bo Ryan visits Chester Biddy Basketball Championships

Chester’s most famous former Chester High School basketball player turned coach kept his promise by visiting the Chester Biddy Summer Basketball championships today at the George E. Carter Boys and Girls Club.

If you recall, league president Ralph Dorsey contacted Bo Ryan seeking support for the summer league and Ryan responded very generously.

At the Boys and Girls Club, Coach Ryan spoke to the huge crowd in attendance before the games to introduce himself to many folks who had no clue who he was or why he was there. There was a lot of surprised looks when he shared the neighborhoods he grew up in and mention of his days as a Biddy player.

For those of you who don’t know, Coach Ryan has been the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin since 2001 and immediately turned that program into a winner. He’s a 3-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and winner of multiple Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. Among coaches with 500 career wins, his percentage ranks second only to Roy Williams.

Since 2007, Coach Ryan has helped raise over $1.5 million for the American Cancer Society. For his efforts, he received the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award in April of this year.

What an honor to spend a few moments with such a great man.

  4. Was a mgr of the Chester High teams when Bo, Mike Marshall & Shamburger played. Glad to see he still supports his city. Remember playing at the Boys Club daily. George & Mr. Mack turned out to be heroes.
