Chester Biddy Basketball Championships

As a former Biddy League Champion myself, I share the joy felt by this youngster whose team earned a first place victory in today's 11-13 year old summer league championship game. He said he never gets a solo photo so I was more than happy to oblige him. Congratulations.

  3. Whats a shame is Chester Biddy has been around since the 50's and for some reason they dont get the respect they deserve these
days many people talk about AAU or Chester High when in reality 98% of the players come from Chester Biddy where they are taught at the age of 6 then as they get better here comes the so called big time neighborhood guys come around asking about this kid or that kid but they better be able to afford the thousands to ride up and down the highway just to play 3 games. The kids played 8-10 games this summer for a mere $10 per player. All the young kids(5-8) were given a gold olympic style medal for participating. That division was instructed by Chris ''Hameen'' Dorsey & Tom Outland they both did a outstanding job teaching the youngsters & many of the coaches .I also noticed several AAU teams in the 9-11 division While The Palace (Formerly Known as 2nd to none, 2 time champions)continued to dominate ended up playing HarPat a team sponsored by a business from Aston all the players were picked from a list of registered players they practiced 2-3 times a week and was able to knock a team called Flip Mode from the Bennett Homes that in the 1st RND knocked off big time AAU 10u TEAM FUTURE that had already looked past the other 6 teams. Then there was the 11-13 div who had 8 teams with 2 teams that stood out Undefeated 7-0 CPride coached by Tamu Garrett and 1st year team 6-1 Top Notch Barbershop a group of kids from Holy City Coached by AJones.Knocked off CPride by 5 pts but not without a few upset people who decided to complain about 2 players 8th grade(twins) that had no problems until the final horn sounded. Most of the games were held at 7th penn st outdoor courts no incidents. With rain in the forecast and Bo Ryan Head coach of Univ Wiscosin Badgers making a camoe appearance We were approved to use the Boys Girls Club. Where he talked about being from Chester & playing in the same league as a youngsters. Bo Sponsored the league with tshirts honoring his dad Butch Ryan told the kids wear and represent chester with pride everyday.I cant end with out speaking on the ALLSTAR GAMES in which every division had a concern with the selection of top player, oh my bad the 11-13 division selection was well earned by 6-1 MVP KB from Eastsides Cottman & Sons Not to be confused by the KB initials im talking about 13yr old power foward Keyon Butler who continued from the famous winter league he dominated evertime he stepped on the court with constant 25 pts 15 rebounds and 3-4 "I told you not to come in my house" blocks that stopped the games on court 2 because of the balls flying from his unbelieviable way of throwing shots.lol If he able to stay on the court he along with the guards Ronell Whitehead,Mike Lewis & Damon Hastings, Cotmans should be able to win a few summer leagues if the age groups moves up.Special Thanks to Bro Jamal Rasheed ,Tj Bates, the referees, and the many coaches who put their personal plans to the side and volunteered all summer long. Thanks RDorsey

    1. Biddy vs AAU.

In my day, Biddy was the only game in town. Across the country local leagues selected an All Star team and they played a tournament in one of the host cities in April. That's where the scouts came to see the best under-13 talent. I played on the Chester Biddy national championship team when I was 11 when the tournament was held at Widener. The following year we got upset in Paterson, NJ - but may have had our hands full against Roosevelt, NY who won that year. i did earn 1st team All-American honors which ranked me in the top 5 players in my age group in the country.

AAU has taken that concept it to an even bigger level with several sports. That's our new official ranking authority for youth sports.

I don't think the top brass at the Biddy national level saw the AAU steam roller coming, and if they did, never intended to compete with it.

In Chester, our Biddy league is sort of stuck in the past, too. We haven't seen much growth, innovation, or business savvy that separates it from any other league. Hell, Biddy can't even consistently find a court to play on from year to year.

But who cares. The bottom line is that Chester men are keeping our local league alive and over 200 kids are experiencing their first taste of what it means to play on a team.

Sure, things can -and should- be done a lot differently. Sure, there's a lot of competition for talent in other leagues like the AAU. Hopefully, some sports business minded folks will capitalize on our great basketball icon known as Chester Biddy and flip it into a self sustaining empire of youth basketball development that the rest of country could emulate.

Until then, keep up the good work.

    2. $10 a player when it was fully sponsored. I smell a payday. 100 kids x $10= free money

      Delete
    3. I didn't see any sponsors. I think Bo Ryan paid for shirts and balls. Not sure who paid for trophies and referees.

      $10 x 100 = $1000, not free money.

Find me any summer league where a kid can play for $10. Even if the organizers took that $1000, split it amongst themselves and filled up their tanks with gas, are you really that concerned?

There's millions being misappropriated around here. Take your fight there.

    4. Stefan you must be from space. Court time, given by the City, Insurance, given by the city, Grant for recreation, given by the city. Medals, $2. You must be from Mars.

      Delete
    5. I'm going to stay in space too if that's where people don't sweat over where a measly $10 a kid goes for a summer full of recreation. You can't even buy Play Dough for $10.

You know those trophies cost more than $2. If not, go price them at Sandrose.

Let's audit Biddy and find they somehow misappropriated $1000. Let's send all the head folks and coaches to jail. Let's have 100+ kids just run the streets for the summer.

Is that where we're going with this? You're creating more of problem then you're trying to expose.

If they gave you the $1000, would you go away?

      Delete
    6. Stefan I'm pretty sure if we audit Biddy's books we would find more than $1000 in misappropriated funds!!!

      Wait a minute!! What books??????

    1. We did have several sponsors in which we used the funds to add the actual sponsors names on the back of the shirts. The Recreation dept. helped pay for the referees and the many awards not to mention every kid did'nt pay but we still allowed to play. Then like mentioned many of the staff who took time to go from 1 end of the city to pick kids up and even drop some off deserved gas money When we have parents using their pickup truck to deliver the adjustable courts . People always want think someone down at Biddy is getting over must be out of their minds especially when every winter we have new school officials who are not familiar wth the legacy the hours of meetings, doing the new forms, calling for insurance rates, setting up registration forms, sites. Go to other local leagues and pay the $150 and we hope you enjoy the 7games. But remember they by the way their allstar teams still have to face us on top of that you may not even be eligible for their allstar teams because of where you live!

    2. Thanks R. Dorsey. It's sad to see people more concerned about a little chump change than they are about kids having something productive to do.

If they are really concerned about where the money is going, help us figure out the school district $100 million dollar budget and how its translating into producing great students. That's money worth worrying about. To worry about $10 a head is a broke persons mentality. We're so tired of that.

  5. Stefan says there were no sponsors visible, Dorsey says we had several sponsors. Maybe this is why Biddy delivers a terrible presentation of their brand. Nobody knows what's going on. SMH

The kids know what's going on. Isn't that the most important thing?

  6. Stefan maybe you would still have a paper if you managed your books better. Chester Spirit has been doing just fine. How can you call $1K dollars chump change to an organization that cries broke every year. Do your self a favor Stefan, stop giving advice. 1K can pay for a lot of things Biddy always says they can't afford. Just give random volunteers money for gas....hahahaha. I thought volunteering was free.

    1. Wanna check Chester Spotlight books? I'll be happy to show them to you. Make an appointment. Keeping my books was easy. I only had one expense and that was printing. Call Press Publishing and ask them if I paid for each of the 48 issues upon receipt and get back to us with their answer.

I call $1000 chump change because $1000 is chump change.

If Biddy is structured as a legitimate business, they have to account for all income and expenses at tax time. If the IRS does like what they see, I'm sure they'll get the audit you all feel they deserve. If you paid $10 to have your kid play, maybe you have a right to ask where the money is going, too.

  7. 1K can go to sending kids to the national tournament again for exposure or real refs. No, lets give it to get gas, or pay my bills.

      $1000 won't get a team to a tournament.

    2. Stefan I want to call this person out on a fact finder. A guy who seem to want run Biddy to offset thier cost to run their travel team program that only has 15 pepole that he recruited by guaranteeing their kids a ride on the Allstar Team.

If They put me in my place they for taking money or incopetence they can press charges or ask eequest me to resign.

But if I break them down EVERY TIME THEY SEE ME THEY HOLLA "YOU THE MAN"! lol

  9. Call the nationals and question what they think about Cheter Biddy. Not only do they know me personally I've earned my respect for starting a new relationship with them we regularly send them bylaws, info regarding rules changes , suspension of coaches, update them on many former the ploayers like Rondae Jefferson, Shep Garner, Daemond Pierce, and later Kyson Rawls, Eric Montinez,Malik Young who all were National Biddy All Americans during their respected times at Chester Biddy they are familiar with our Nationally Ranked high school team which featured 8 our or 2005 Biddy Allstar team which I coached to the final game only losing to a New Orleans team who had never been beaten since they were 8years old we earned our respect by beating the 2 of 4 times every game went to either over time or dbl ot.afer the tournament ended the Nationsal Officials said we lost because of parents making critical plays from the sidelines during the end of the game.We felt the team was better and the coaches were really good our kids enjoyed the time. Now these days we allow our coaches select the teams and that has caused us so many problems we will be vting this season to allw the board members to select the top players so we now eliminate the favortism -buddy-buddy click system thet we notice have began to come back .Now if you ask any of the parents who kids travel to Nationals The league spent over $6000 including WAM MONEY(WALK AROUND MONEY)to make sure every coach kids had a memorial experience. Now the G you keep talking about ask the parents or kids was it worth it? the past couple years many of the coaches decide to hurry up and build their AAU Teams then sell the parents hoop dreams having the parents seperate from our ALLSTAR TEAM because they either lost in the playoffs or werent selected to coach the Allstar team they even make sure the kids dont show up for dates we have for fun day or banquet so we rather not waste the money we save it for the next season something 10 years nago would have never happened Biddy nhas been self sufficient and do get limited sponsors many sponosr 1 year then not the next.People want me to run this league because they know I care and speak up for the kids. Now I dont know who you would think could pay their bills.I work, Cut hair, and live in a small apt on 3rd st. all my kids moms work some of my kids even help at Biddy every Sat and Sunday I dont walk around politicing about who doing this or that .We have several comissioners that help with many of the things that you do and say well I did this for you Bro U aint got to do noting for me do it for the kids and then you may be able to get a position on the board as it seem tombe your main reason to mess with Mr Roots. Holla at me like a man than maybe we can gey you a whisle since u like to make call from the side line!lol RDorsey

  10. We at Biddy has given many families that lost a former player or parent a donation.Every year we spend over $2000 doing things like taking between $100-$500 to the flower shop, funeral homes, cemetery,or take to the door of these people that we consider family. We attend the service, visit hospitals, have even been asked to be palberors. We just dont do basketball we visit the schools and let the teachers know if we can help call us. We have gone to many neighbor hoods and talked to at-risk youths, we get letters from prisons from fathers asking us to make sure we get their kids signed up. .I look at Mr. Roits as being neutral so maybe we can get him to do a city wide survey asking any question some for kids some for parents. That will help us determine how the league is doing according to the people. Make a list of 10 people and ask them what do they think of this person and what we need to do to make the program better.I really dont like to let our true sponsons info out beacuse we have people go out and say they are from Biddy and ask for cash donations even some of the new programs are trying to get our sponsors.

I feel confident that I know what im doing and dont have to hide anything and if im not taking any of the funds nobody else is they know I will put them on the spot if I feel something isnt right.
I've come too far in life to be in the papers for a lousy $1000 that I dont even need.Im not the type of person that would shake ya hand and soon as you turn ya back i wink at your woman or get dressed to come show off in front of people kids.Or hate on a person cause they kid may be a better player than mines.I feel like im going to be a National Biddy board member 1 day it may take another 20 years of dealing with Chester or movin on to another state and starting a program but I wont allow anyone around here to try to make me give up on something im in love with Biddy is part of my life like my kids and I give them my all my last my honesty my blood sweat and tears!

  12. RDorsey, you are all over the place with your numbers. The Boys and Girls Club is where the league was and should be. Why did you change locations if you are all about the kids? To make money? That is fine if that is the case, but don't say its all about the kids or I don't need $1000 dollars. Keep it real!

  13. All the talent Biddy has, it is followed up with presentation that resembles no growth. If RDorsey is all about kids, then the presentation should at some point go to the next level. Run it right, pay yourself, but also pay something back to the league. The kids deserve a better presentation of their talent.

    2. In the past 6years Chester Biddy has sent 4 teams to the Nationals. If you stop throwing the mud we wont be stuck.People like you always talking behind peolpe backs and thatdo hurt some people but I understand hidden agenda nI seen nthem too many times since I got involved with positive programs. You wan your kids to play but talk about the schools other people that may not be as fortunate as you but remember one day your kids will have a family and may not be as lucky as a pop pop. Then what you do tell them to put some brown lip stick on! Ive had enough of you so I'll take the motivation and get ready for our 58th season of helping these kids enjoya wonderful winter where we put kids in front of hidden agendas!

  14. The day I was appointed President I went to Mr Joe and left a letter in his mail mbox on how much I thought he meant to the program after several attemptsmto reach him I knocked on his dorr and told him I was the 1 who left the letters he sai thanksbut he wanted to thonk about coming back after the way the built a clique on him. But after he saw how adament I was about what he meant to us all at Chester Biddy he dicided to come back as Player AGENT AND SCHEDULER. HE HAS BEEN DOING THAT FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS E IS ALSO THE FIRST PERSON i REACH OUT TO REGARDING ANYTHING BIDDY SOMETIMES HE SAY LETS GO FOR IT OTHER TIMES HE Say lets hold off.Joe IS 70 yrs old he still refs for us he but then he still have some of the very guys whos kids still mad because his team usd to beatbthem or they aint make the Allstar team. Now that Im president I ask him what is wrong wwith these people he begins to talk to me for hours and prays for me knowing my situation he also says you got to have tough skin dealing with these young parents he say "They living their kids". 15. I like to get on this site because it gives me a chance to see how and what people want us to do at Biddy but remember vwe have a board th at votes on many of the things .Its hard to just do what the people want us to do because some are just in it for thier own kids and that the problem .Then we have people that want the program to fail. Many times In hear people say yall doing a good job I also hear people say my kids not coming back but as soon as the next program they wait to see how many people we have and say damn they got 200 already then call and say Hi Can I sign my kids up.Parents seem to be the problem but they do come out. just think about it if we call a school board meeting at Biddy how many people would come or if we had to meet and ask why did they close the schools nobody would be there.

  16. Sure we want to get to the next level but it takes us all to work together All i do is speak up for the kids and against cliques or politics. As for the Boys Club when it came to business we just didnt see them being able to compare with what the schools had to offer other that a new gym 1st of all how can you do a schedule for our program and have us playing 2 games at the same time m now maybe you just dont care about the safety of kids or fans no lines were down I felt disrespected for someone to even try to run a operation like that or maybe I was being set up for failure. If you go in and see for youself how can yountrynto have 2 games going at the same time .then get mad at me for speaking up about the safty of our kids then ngo be spiteful and sa well wait til next year and charge us more than the schools it was like either you come or you dont. Our board decided not to go back and it hurt me as president that we were even put in a situation like that. Now as we look at the many programs that the boys club has to offer we would love to connect withnthem and hopefully the kids will get a fair nchance at renting or even nparting eith the boys club and the school distOur new appointed commissioners heve gotten the chance to volunteer over the summer and give input and get a clear understanding that no mkiid will be left behind because he lives at a shelter or he lives in Upland or the projects, sun village, highland gardens,Feltonville or 21st st.ow 1 thing we are going to make sure is tht we have volunteers that have child abuse clearance forms , not coming in to be disespectful, womanizers,or gangsters. As younall know I have put my life on the line for yor child many of times so if you dont Come In Peace We Call The POLICE! R.DORSEY
