Is Chester High School Basketball better now or then?

There’s nothing more exciting than having your home town team win a state championship in anything, especially basketball.
It’s impossible to compare teams from different eras, but it’s always fun to imagine.
Despite the 2010-2012 Chester High School basketball team’s record breaking performances these past couple years, are they truly the best team Chester has ever put on the floor?

“Hey Oldheads!”
Is this team better than the Emerson Baynard teams? Could they beat the Herman Harris, Mann Brothers, Randy Legette, and Carlton ‘Silk’ Gordy teams?
“Hey not-so Oldheads!”
How would this team match up to the Zane Shaw, Jameer Nelson, Nasir Robinson, Rahlir Jefferson, Darrin Govens, Karon Burton teams?
It’s just barbershop talk, but I’m curious what you guys think.

  1. Yes, this team is better than any of the old teams. However, Emerson Baynard is still the best basketball player ever to come out of Chester High.

  2. Really?

I think the Herman Harris teams would crush the Rondae Jefferson teams.

    1. That would be a very interesting game. What are your top 5 players all-time? Please rank 1-5.

    2. I'll admit that I didn't see the Top 5 Chester High ballers.

I'm too young to have seen Em or Horace, but I'm convinced they would be on the list. I wasn't in the area to see Zane or Jameer. I saw Mike Marshall do his thing at The Cage after his high school days. He was amazing. I never saw Granny Lash play.

I did see Herman Harris. He was the LeBron James of his day with his size and skills. I saw him score 65 one night. He's the best big guard I've seen. Silk Gordy was the best 10th grader. Nasir was a monster on the boards. Rondae is one of the best defenders I've seen.

I can't come up with a top five list because I didn't see many of the best players, but the best team I saw was Herman's.

The three point circle makes the game much different than in the old days when everything revolved around the big men under the basket. It becomes a question of whether the open style of today's game could complete with the tight sets of yesteryear.

I still believe basketball is a big man's game and today's players are great at getting to the basket but can't shoot a 12 footer. The old school guys play better defense under the basket and were better shooters. That's why I give them the edge.

  3. That would be a nice survey to publish. Chester High's all-time 1st and 2nd teams. What due you think? Being an oldtimer myself, my 1st team is:

    1. Emerson Baynard 2. Horace Walker 3. Jameer Nelson 4. Herman Harris 5. Zane Shaw
