The Mayor is running for mayor - Again?

In August, I did a poll asking who should be the mayor of Chester. I asked if Mayor Butler was permitted to run again. There were 9 comments but no one answered that question.

I'll re-ask it this way...How many terms can a Chester mayor serve?

Does anyone know?

  1. I don't...but I DO have a question for you, Stefan? Why isn't 9th street salted? 291 looks great, but for 9th street to be not only a snow emergency route but also considered a highway, why does it look like a side street? Industry Row, as 291 is beginning to resemble, should not be the only priority in the city.....I love my city - but I HATE the politics here :( Where are the streets department doing??

  2. Crazy indeed. I live on 9th St and my back alley is clear and the street is not. Councilwoman West is the one to ask.

Ok, I've done my research. I've been informed that Butler can run as many times as he wants. There is no term max in Chester (Hope my source is right) LOL!

  6. Well I hope someone really good is running against him because that's who I'm voting for.

  7. OK. We have a response. CHESTER MAYORS HAVE NO TERM LIMITS. I wonder when that started?

  8. I believe Councilman Linder is also running for mayor.

Grab a Chester Spirit paper. That's were I get most of my info on city politics.

  9. How many terms have he served already? Is Chester apart of our democracy? Is this like a dictatorship for life position like Hosni Mubarak in Egypt?

  10. Mayor Butler has served 2 full terms, and the balance of Senator Pileggi's term after he moved on to State Senate, for a total of 10 years as mayor.

Democracy is a tricky word to define, yet, there is political pularism in Chester. There are democrats and republicans, if that's what you mean.

Mayor Butler's 10 year reign is nothing like the dictatorship of Mubarak. There are no humanitarian abuses or torture going on around here. Mayor Butler is respectful and operates with dignity. You may not agree with his positions, policies, or politics, but that comes with the territory no matter who is in office.

Mayor for life isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes change is not a good thing especially if there is no one capable of doing a better job.

The only way a Chester mayor can stay in office for life is if Chester voters keep him/her in office. That's why there are elections every 4 years.

We'll see in November if Chester voters want Mayor Butler to continue or not.

It's not up to him, it's up to you.

  11. Thank God it is not up to me! I am just an outside observer thank you. You don't have to torture people to be a dictator. A dictatorship is a life time term unless the person is overthrown in a coup. A democracy is a society in which people elect representatives to serve our needs. If that's what Butler is doing so be it. But based on some of the comments, past and present, about his regime some may want a change. Giving other a chance and change is what democracy in this country is all about except for Chester it looks like.

I here Widener has a good Political Science Department you may want to take a class or two since you are one of their biggest cheerleaders. Since you get all your political stories from the Spirit, which I would have never admitted to, you may want to find alternative sources as well.

  12. I am no political scientists, and have no interest to study as one, but I don't agree that a life term equates to a dictator. Does that make our supreme court judges dictators?

Where do you get your Chester political news? I'm not a big fan of either, but besides the Chester Spirit and the Daily Times, what else do we have?

  13. I agree, thank God, I know you are no political scientists. The Supreme Court Judges have a different role than the head of a government. Therefore, your question does not "equate" to mine. There is no real correlation between my references to a head of government to the Supreme Court Justices. They can be replaced without a coup. So you make no sense! I don't care what your political source is. I don't worry about Chester politics because it won't change. My focus is national and international.

  14. If people legally vote you in til you die and you serve them well, I don't understand how thats a dictator. A dictator is someone who dicates. A one term politician can be a dictator.

    What am I missing here?

Sorry, I thought u did care about my sources. Isn't that why you mentioned the Chester Spirit?

You don't worry about Chester politics because it wont change? Would you worry if it does change?

  15. NO, No, No, You are missing it all as usually. I don't care about you or your sources.

  16. Oh well.

Mayor Butler is running for a third term and I heard it first in the Chester Spirit. That is my story and I am sticking with it.
