Who remembers this video from May 12, 2012?
Mayor John Linder is not being honest when he claims the theme for Chester is an Entrepreneurial Community.
The overwhelming evidence of this fact is from a rumor I heard today stating that he has allowed CEDA to stop contributing to Entrepreneur Works (formerly Chester Microenterprise).
Micro enterprises are to small business development as public housing is to home ownership.
African and Asia have used the Micro Enterprise business model to assist people with no access to capital and given them the ability to obtain very small loans to start their business.
Micro Enterprise organization are very rare in America. Chester has been fortunate to have been host to one for over 13 years through Entrepreneur Works partially financed with funding support from CEDA.
Hundreds of people have attended the 7-week Entrepreneur Works business classes learning the critical components of what it takes to start a small business. No one teaches this stuff. You may find a seminar here or there, but a complete course on starting small businesses are extremely rare. I won’t even mention the ridiculously low tuition.
Graduates may participate in Peer Groups, typically comprised of their former classmates, and become their own loan committee approving small loans for each other financed from Entrepreneur Works funds.
Entrepreneur Works is a Philadelphia non-profit organization. Over the past few years they’ve shared office space with Widener’s Small Business Development Center - the best 1-2 punch any entrepreneurial community can claim. I expect that with no support from Chester, it’s likely this small business generator will move to another community.
When you toss a world class organization like Entrepreneur Works, which creates business people out of your own citizens, I question your commitment to creating or sustaining entrepreneurs.
There have been some questionable moves by city government since they’ve taken over last year, but this is one that proves there is no commitment to bringing new business to Chester.
So, whenever you hear Mayor Linder claim Chester is an Entrepreneurial Community, challenge him to show you the proof. I’d go so far as to say he’s lying until he can prove to me otherwise. Up to now, it’s been all talk.
Throwing a bunch of computers in Chester High School is not creating small business loans and business education needed to start new companies. Please, correct me if I’m wrong.

DeleteThere in office because we put them in office. But that's alright, we gave them a chance and now we can take them right out of office if they do not represent us. It is time we let the politicians know that if they don't fairly represent their constituents, that they are not doing their job. We will just have to have patients and continue to put people in those positions until we find the right people. I am still upset about the once a week trash pick-up. First, they don't even meet with the community to find out if this is what they want, then they make a decision to stop the 2nd trash pick-up in the summer. They stop the service, but they did not reduce the rubbish fee. So now the taxpayers are paying for a service that they will not be receiving. Crocks!

DeleteAfter all that's happened on the CEDA board in the past year, if you don't think the appointed board members are influenced by the folks who appointed them, shame on you.
If the mayor is not responsible, he should be raising hell that city money is no longer aiding the top entrepreneur effort in the city, especially if he want to be recognized as the entrepreneurial mayor. Otherwise, how can you believe anything he claims to stand for in this the city he runs?
CEDA has public meetings. Attend one and ask them all those questions and don't leave until you get your answers.
To Anonymous 8pm. The board are all democratic appointees. All democrats should be on the same page. The mayor is on the entrepreneur page. CEDA board members are not. That creates another disconnect within the party, don't you agree?

Sure, folks can take a computer class but I don't see where it's teaching them to start a business. That shouldn't even be the intent of the class for first time computer users.
Entrepreneur Works and Widener's Small Business Development Center are designed to teach people how to start a business, not a computer class at the high school.
