With The Oprah Winfrey Show coming to an end today, I shared with a friend that I had never seen a single episode, which they found hard to believe. Other than an occasional peek at a late night talk show, I’m not a fan of the format.
That’s not to say that I don’t love Oprah.
I’m a sucker for any rags to riches story, and it’s special when it happens to a regular girl from the ‘hood. Just getting on TV is 'arriving' for most people, but she went from there to turning her craft into an empire.
She wasn’t born into money or got drafted as a lottery pick. She just chipped away at her passion to a point of success that may never be duplicated in the same fashion again.
I love Oprah so much that on a business trip to Amarillo, Texas, I asked to stay in the same hotel she stayed during the beef trial. The locals told me she rented out a bed & breakfast and put up a big fence all around it. I ended up at the Holiday Inn.
I was asked how could I say I love Oprah without ever seeing her show? “The same way many people love President Obama without ever watching a State of the Union address,” was my response.
Obviously, there aren’t many Oprah’s around, and very few of us will ever reach her star, but she is a living example of what can happen when you identify your dream, work it with passion, and don’t give up.
