United Way Partners with Boeing and Local Organizations to Host Parenting Workshops

For the past six weeks, Delaware County Family Centers, Women's Resource Center, Crozer Library, and United Way of Southeast Delaware County have been cosponsoring parenting workshops for mothers. Participants gathered at the J. Lewis Crozer Library to discuss the problems they were facing, share their feelings and relieve stress, and learn some new parenting skills. The six week program covered a variety of topics, including: anger and stress management, single-parenting, decision making skills, positive discipline, financial and legal issues, and development and nutrition.

Over the six week program, the mothers were able to really connect with each other and see the group as a source of relief and support. One of the women, Danielle, stated that "it made me feel empowered." They all expressed how despite their different ages, backgrounds, etc., it was extremely helpful to meet with each other because they all shared the common bond and struggle of being a mother. Theresa, pictured above, said that the program "released a lot of stress, and my son and I got to meet new people. It helped a lot to meet other people who were going through the same thing." At the final workshop's closing, all of the women received certificates as well as bags decorated by their children to commemorate their completion of the course.  The women were proud of their successes, and at the same time were extremely grateful for the opportunity to meet and learn from each other.

United Way wishes to thank Delaware County Family Centers, the Women's Resource Center, the Crozer Library, and especially Boeing for helping make this program a reality, and a huge benefit to these women.

P.S. I’m that guy who is quick to say that the #1 cop-out most people use for youth problems is the parent. We have to find ways of dealing with our youth as if they have parents that are not doing their job.

However, when a parent wants to do better, it’s great to know that there are organizations that will work with them to help make that happen.

Thanks United Way, Crozer Library, Delco Family Centers, the Women’s Resource Center, and Boeing, for helping parents parent.  FYI, men are parents, too.

  1. It's always great to see the community coming together to help moms out, especially if they are single moms who need as much help and support as they can get.
