Mark Twain is very funny and bold enough to write it as he sees it. Lately, folks have decided that it’s time to clean up some of that bold writing. Is it right? You be the judge.
I normally wouldn’t have shared this story, but when I read what this guy says about how he reads Huck Finn to his kids, I thought I’d share.

No the "N" word should not have been censored from the classic Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. What are you going to do censor all the novels out there just because you don't like a word? Are you willing to censor some of these rap songs with that same word? No matter what the meaning? I'm a writer. Are you going to censor my writings too? I bet Mark Twain would roll over in his grave if he knew that his writing is being changed. And for what to appease the masses...We might not agree with history but we shouldn't change it just to make it look pretty. I'm uncomfortable with some of the writings out there but how are we supposed to know the truth. How are we supposed to think? How are we suppose to learn? I don't want or need history to lie to me. If you don't want your kids to watch a certain TV show, you don't make them see it. This is called parental control. If you don't want your kids to read a certain book, then don't let them. Wait until they are mature enough to decide for themselves. What do you think we should do about stories on the Holocaust? Should we forget about the slave trade?
ReplyDeleteBy the way the "You" is a generalized word and does not personally relate to you. Thanks for sharing this story.
Absolutely not. The N word is offensive and so is the racial history of our nation but we do a disservice to where we've come from if we cover up the past. Huckelberry Finn uses an offensive word but its message is racially progressive (for it's day) and it shouldn't be censored.
ReplyDeleteBy the way the Tea Party is trying to remove slavery from textbooks in TN. They not only want to change a word but erase history.
