Laquan Robinson Named MAC Football Rookie of the Year

Widener freshman Laquan Robinson (Chester High School grad) capped his electrifying year by being picked Middle Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Robinson also was named first team All-MAC as a specialist and second team all-league as a defensive back.

Robinson showed the type of game-changing explosiveness not seen for Widener in quite some time with three punt returns for touchdowns and one kickoff return for a score. He easily was first in the league with 14.0 yards per punt return and fifth with 22.0 yards per kickoff return.

It was his individual plays which ignited the Pride that made the difference. This started October 2 against FDU-Florham with punt returns for touchdowns of 63 and 62 yards in Widener's 35-20 win. It continued November 6 against Wilkes with an 87-yard kickoff return for a score in a 41-21 victory.

His third punt return for a score might have been the most important. With Widener trailing 27-13 on Saturday midway through the fourth quarter at No. 8 Delaware Valley, he made the return look way too easy for a 54-yard gallop in the team’s stunning 28-27 triumph.

Robinson, who did not start at cornerback until week five against King’s, is Widener's first Rookie of the Year since present senior linebacker Joe Favinger (Mohnton, PA) was so honored in 2007.
