When I saw the plans for PPL Park, the professional soccer stadium in Chester, I immediately thought it would be a great place for Temple football. I’ve watched them play at the Linc a couple times and there is no college football atmosphere there because the place is so huge and seems so empty, even with 20,000 people scattered around the lower level. A place like PPL Park would be jammed packed and would give the team a true home team advantage.
I heard rumors that Villanova football was considering PPL Park long ago but I dismissed those rumors because even as national champions you can always get a ticket to see a Nova football game even though their Main Line stadium isn’t much larger than one you’d find at a big high school.
The Philadelphia Daily News announced that now that Nova football is considering stepping into the Big East, they’re required to have more seating and PPL Park fits the bill. Although the talks are preliminary and there seems to be a few logistics to consider, I’m excited that it may happen.
I haven’t had much interest to see a soccer game down there, but as a Villanova alum, I’d be down there for every game, maybe even tailgating in my back yard before I go.
When I attended Nova, Howie Long was playing football. I remember him best in pick-up basketball games in the old field house. An awesome athlete, he was definitely a guy you wanted on your team to avoid being crushed by his blazing speed and huge body. Brian Westbrook is the most familiar recent grad. Yet, when Nova moves to Chester, everyone becomes a star.
