When does blasphemy become flattery?
Some fans would peg any Michael Jackson impersonator as blasphemous but Montray Cherry put on a show at Freedom Theater yesterday that was pure flattery.
The show started with a couple groups mimicking the Jackson 5 with lip-synch performances that were good but not worth the price of admission. Afterwards, a couple guys sang a gorgeously arranged rendition of ‘Lady of My Life’ in a-cappella which really got the crowd’s attention.
Then, Michael Jackson appeared.
For the next 90 minutes, Montray Cherry put on an exhausting and exquisite foray of Michael Jackson tunes with great choreography, costumes and singing over a hushed MJ.
Cherry, from Brooklyn has been a MJ impersonator for 12 years and brought his acclaimed show to Philly at the request of friends. After a stint in London and China, Cherry will take his show to Las Vegas where he’ll be a regular on the strip in the next few months.
I saw the Jackson Five at the Spectrum and The Jacksons at the Civic Center. I never saw Michael Jackson in his later years but I really felt like I did yesterday.

p.s. I didn’t bring my cameras because I had no intent to take a single photo but thanks to the cell phone I was able to bring you this video. Sorry for the less then stellar quality.
Not in Chester...has absolutely nothing to do with Chester
ReplyDeleteChester's biggest asset is its proximity to Philadelphia. Until my Chester residency prohibits me from leaving the city limits you'll likely find me in the nations 6th largest city enjoying culture. You know this blog would be worthless if I just wrote about happenings in Chester.
ReplyDeletePlease consider taking a kid to the zoo, a museum, a play, a concert, an Eagles game or the airport. They may be less likely to want to protect their block if they could get involved in life outside of Chester. Unfortunately, It may be too late for many adults to change as evidenced by the above comment.
Wow that's a great come back. When I read the blog it sounded a little gay but I was not motivated to take a trip to Philly to see a Michael Jackson impersonator for $35, although I did have a crush on the black Michael Jackson. The last time I saw him in concert was with his brothers in Philly (The Victory Tour?). It was a great concert. I don't think anything can compare to that but by all means get some cultural exposure outside of the city if you can afford it and have the means to get there.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I felt the same way but I have a lot of respect for the person who initially sent me the flyer so I took a chance and caught the show. I can truly say that I got my $35 worth. I had Michael fatigue when I left there. And, I was thrilled to see so many parents brought their children out. The kids really got excited seeing the show.
