Where did they find 500 students?

"On July 22, the Chester Upland School District announced that Main Street School, which was slated for closure, will remain open. This capped a frenzied effort by administrators, staff and volunteers to increase school district enrollment by 500. This is quite an accomplishment and everyone involved deserves to be congratulated."
Hold on there Bobalouie!

I’d love to believe that the administrators actually enrolled 500 students just on face value, but it’s difficult for me to believe anything that comes out of 1720 Melrose Ave these days.

Sure, they hit the streets, knocked on doors, robo-called households and cell phones. But did they really enroll 500 kids?

Who are these kids? What grades are they in? Are they toddlers just starting school or maybe drop outs coming back to school to get a diploma?

Did the administrators really accomplish the real goal of taking students out of the charter schools and placing them behind desks in our public schools?

I doubt if they’ll ever share the real data on their recruiting efforts, but if the charters lost 500 students, I’m sure we would have heard an outcry from them by now.

    1. I'm not sure who I've sold out to. If you know, tell them to hurry with the check.

  5. My two boys are enrolled at Main Street for this upcoming school year and will also be the next year (maybe) - they're in Pre-K and 2nd grade. I have lived in Chester since 2000 when I myself went to Main Street, but moved to West Chester for the last school year for my oldest who was then in 1st grade. Unfortunately, his teacher was very far from being great with a Master's degree to boot. We felt the money we were spending for a better education and peace of mind just wasn't worth it at that point in our boys' life.

In Chester, my youngest will be able to enjoy a full day Pre-K and Kindergarten class (not found anywhere around Delaware and Chester counties to my knowledge, save for Kindergarten where only the charter schools {not just CCCS} offer full day Kindergarten), and we've managed to find a block where we don't hear or see the violence in Chester (except on Facebook and in DelcoTimes of course). My husband and I think Main Street will be great, if only because most of the students will be at the neighboring charter school, so hopefully our boys can progress while attending MS. We will use my oldest as a gauge for when it's time to move to another school district. Most likely when my youngest is entering 1st grade and my oldest in 4th, we will be looking for a permanent residence outside of Chester.
