Chester schools will close if door-to-door selling is unsuccessful

This man may knock on your door looking for your kid.
CUSD superintendent Gregory Shannon
We’re not talking candy sales here. We’re talking people sales. In a unique attempt to save two schools from closing, the school district will be knocking on your door to recruit your children.

The Chester Upland School District is slated to close Main Street Elementary School and the Chester Upland School of the Arts unless the district increases its student enrollment by about 300 students.

I’m the biggest optimist you’ll find anywhere, but 300 is a tall number to achieve without one of the existing charter schools reducing enrollment or closes.

Chester Upland administrators joined the Pennsylvania NAACP at Main Street Elementary on Monday to encourage parents to enroll their children within district schools. With increased enrollment comes the critical state subsidiaries the district needs to cover the personnel and operating costs necessary to keep the buildings open.
I guess we should assume the Chester NAACP is involved too? And how many parents came out on Monday? Hopefully 300.
“We’re asking parents for their business,” Receiver Joseph Watkins said. “We’ve got a new superintendent in place and some new programs and some great schools. We’d love for their children to come back to our schools.”
I’m willing to bet that Chester parents have never been ‘asked for their business’ when it comes to selecting a school for their children. Parents have asked for a safer learning environment that gets results.
Superintendent Gregory Shannon and Deputy Superintendent Tamara Thomas Smith will be going door-to-door today and Wednesday, highlighting the benefits of Chester Upland schools.
I never...
Here are the typical reactions to expect: 1) The shades will be pulled and curtains closed. 2) “Why y’all only come around at election time?” 3) “You want to do what with my child?” 4) “Please come in and let’s discuss the possibilities.”
Which reaction do you think our superintendent will face the most?

I am elated that the Superintendent, administrators, NAACP, and community members will go out and encourage parents to enroll in the public schools. These schools need to stay open. These schools are producing outstanding students. These charter schools on the other hand are not. Even though you do not here about the fighting in these schools it happens. Most of the students in the charter schools in Chester, PA are label as special education so the charter schools can receive more money. The charter schools in Chester, PA are not doing a great job of educating our children. The charter schools say how much parent involvement they have but the only reason they have that is because they give away TV's, Trips to Disney World, IPADS, and Nooks, and they also give away gift certificate to foot locker for students who excel on the PSSA. These charter schools do not care about the students in Chester, PA they just care about what money will go into their pockets. I am a product of the Chester-Upland School District, I attended Columbus Elementary, Showalter Midddle School and Chester High School Academy and I would just like to thank all of the wonderful teachers in the Chester-Upland School District for educating me. I encourage all parents to send your children back to the public school and to be involve in their education.

    1. My kidd attend Chester Charter and they are not labeled special ed by a long shot. Im up on top of what my kids bring home and what they are learning in the classroom. My kids are in the enrichment class and some of the work they have to do is pretty tough. I have taken and shown the work to some people with very high achievement and educational background and I was told if they learning this stuff that's excellent. Just look how many students are getting 4 year scholarships to attend other high schools besides CUSD. Trust me I seen some of the post & a lot of people don't want our kids attending their schools, therefore, CCCS must be teaching these kids something because they are tested before these other high schools take them. Kurt get your information correct before you go labeling the kids @ the Charter schools
