Who attended Chester's 4th of July?

A couple readers want to comment on Chester's 4th of July celebration. Here's your chance.

  1. I attended the event and it was TERRIBLE. No petting zoo for the kids, no horse an carriage ride for the kids. There were three vendors that served real food. The outdoor movie was going on while the fireworks were going on. Who does that? That was a waste. I can't remember the last time fourth of July in the city of Chester was that bad. There were no banners telling us who was performing what happen to the fashion show. Linder and this Council gets a F for the 4th of July. I was embarrassed, I regret not voting for Mayor Butler

  2. I agree that was a poor display of a cities function Liz Williams that was horrible. Last year we had a weekend of fun for the kids, my kids did not want to leave Chester Park this year they wanted to leave after the first 30mins. I counted 75 people besides the workers.

  3. July 4th was horrible! This isn't the change I voted for bringing the Democrats to city hall. So disappointed!

  4. How much was spent on this. I guess that's how they were able to bump up salaries ( Whitney White $200,000.00 Ron Starr $110,00.00) and have the Commish and the Mayor ride around in BRAND NEW 2012 Tahoos. Don't spend it on the people. I agree last 4 years were great times on the 4th of July in the City you had world known artist hip hop and R&B with no problems. This year we have Kelly Price and local artist. SMDH. This is not the CHANGE I wanted.

  5. I was disappointed in the 4th of July event as well. We got there about 7ish and the band was rapping up and there were no more acts so we sat with no music or other entertainment waiting for it to get dark for the fireworks. I said to Liz, can we at least get some music? She commented that the music would interfere with the movie. Duhhh what about the folks not interested in watching the SMURFS. Lets hope tonights concert with Kellie Price is so well put together the 4th of July event will be past history LOL

  6. Ok, a lot of disappoint...no suggestions, ideas, no "maybe I'll help next year. Not for this particular case, but this let me watch and critic everything the city officials do is wack. No just for the dems but the repubs also. We live in a city of 34,000, thats small enough for every single person to make a significant impact if they chose to. We elect people to lead, not do all the damn work themselves. The 4th of July may not have been good this year, so go to a meeting or join a commitee to assist on projects. I don't care who we elect for the next 20 years, if we keep this "Me do nothing, but judge everything" attitude, we won't progress anywhere. Opulence or Decadence? Our choice, not any elected officials.

    1. They fired some good hard working people who did everything they are getting blasted for. Linder brought this on him. He should of let Portia West run Parks and Recreation you have other Council persons stating how bad of a job Liz is doing.
You can't ask everyone to come together in unity when you fire good workers and people because of politics.

    2. Well I was at the Kelly Price Concert that was reschedulled to city hall, and no one knew and Portia ran that and it was a disaster....so Portia ain't doing much better and how can anyone join any commitee when everything is being kept from the people until the last minute and oh wait what is that other little thing....oh yeah there are no commitee's that include any citizens at least any that live in this city, so for every one thinking the citizens need to do more, yeah you're right but this adminstration needs to be more welcoming of the people that they WORK for the people who voted them in....Ha jokes on them....

    3. SMH.. How Can You Help or Volunteer When It Seems Like these Dems Got It All Figured Out And Not Really Interesting In Hearing Other People Opinions Or How Things Have Been Done.. What Are You To Do When You Try To Talk To People Who Were Once Touchable And Wanted Your Votes But Now All Of A Sudden Numbers Have Changed And Some Attitudes As Well. You Were All Friendly An Opened To Get Our Votes But The Tables Have Now Turned Since You Are In City Hall.. Where Are Those People That We Thought Had Our Backs And Made Promises?? Them Republicans Coming For Their Places Back And The Way Things Going Alot Of Citizens Are Fed Up. Its Been Nothing But Chaos With The People Linder Hired Under His Adminstration. Dont Think Those Dems Need To Get To Comfortable....

    4. What happen at City Hall and you mean to tell me they spent $6,000.00 for 100 people in city hall. That's CRAZY. They paid for her flight, hotel and food. Come on Chester give them a break they only been in office for 6 months. Like someone said earlier can wait until State Reps event. Who's coming Stevie Wonder?

    5. ok anonymous why should chester residents have to give you ideas or recommendtions that is your JOB and may I add a 50,000.00 job. Do your JOB and do outreach before the event not after. I'm sure that's how it's done in new jersey

  7. NEW CHESTER WROTE;NOT JUST BRCAUSE OF THE LACK OF ACTS,BUT FOR MORE OF THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION ABOUT EVENTS PLANED FOR THE 4TH,WE HAD KNOW NOTICE AT ALL,NO NOTICE LEADS TO LACK OF SUPPORT,IF AT ALL POSSIBLE COULD FIND OUT WHAT THE ENTERTAINMENT BUDGET IS AND POST IT,AND ALSO HOW DO THEY GO ABOUT REACHING OUT TO LOCAL ACTS,BECAUSE OLD SCHOOL AND RAP SHOULD NOT BE ON SAME TICKET,ITS QUITE CLEAR THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING,WHO EVER IS HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE CITY OF CHESTER NEEDS TO BE TERMINATED,FOR LACK OF COMMUNICATION

    ReplyDelete
  8. Terminated for a lack of information, seriously? Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  9. The communications director was home in New Jersey where she lives not Chester like she is suppose to. Oh she may be using someones address in Chester to keep her $50,000.00 job.
Why was there vendors out in the park and nothing going on? This was such a disgrace for all of the fun my family has had during 4th of July in the city of Chester to this crap is unbelievable.
Linder I voted for you but not next time, we still have violence, the school district is still terrible, your appointments are all friends of yours, liffe long democrats, and outsiders who don't know our city. I should have voted for Butler

    1. Your point is very valid except the City and the School Dist. are to separate entities...the Mayor's office has absolutely no say over the school dist.

    2. You should have voted for Butler, if it aint broke dont fix it. He wasnt perfect but these democrats are simply greedy, new vehicles, firing qualified people only to bring in unqualified people at a higher salary. And we know good and darn well if Butler would have demoted a black police chief and brought in a white one this city would have wanted his head on a platter. People of Chester wake up already! These people are going to bankrupt the city and I guarantee you they are going to blame the previous administration.

    3. I agree with the statement about the Chief of Police. Not only did he demote him he TRIED to CUT his SALARY. Understand that CHESTER. Let me say it again not only did he demote the black man he tried to take money from his household $20,000.00. WOW

  10. Years prior they people recieved a schedule of events and acts glad I didn't go. Maybe they are saving money for Thads event in August you know he is running the city.

  11. Give Linder a break! Still violence, school district still terrible....I've been able to hold my breathe longer than he's been mayor. At least give the man two years before you wrote him off. 6 months in office for Pete's sake. I bet some of you were the same ones screaming "Give Obama time", well, give Linder time time. You'll be able to grade him in November 2015. 'Til then, get off the bench and help, its your city too

    1. I would give Linder a break if he didn't pick Friday the 13th to fire people without notice, didn't demote Chief Alston and tried to take 20,000.00 put of his pocket (until he sued), if he didn't appoint outsiders to important positions. He allowed the police to move out of the city after 3years, he did not sign the contract with the firefighters after he promised he would during his campain. Do you agree with decisions he has made in the six months? I dont. Now he switched Liz Williams and Portia West, did he give Liz a chance? The CEDA board he appointed fired the ED without his knowledge. All of this and we get short changed with the fourth of July but he rides around in a brand new truck.

    2. Good point and since all these peole don't have to live in the city they don't care about the city and why should they the people elected rarely does..

  13. Did Kelly Price perform at Chester Park on Saturday like they announced? I was told it was cancelled because it was going to rain (even though it didn't).

  14. My family set up shop at the park 11:30 on the 4th WE WERE THE ONLY ONES COOKING and usually we are bombarded with free loaders, there wasn't anyone around to freeload.
We went to see Kelly Price was told it was canceled but not that it was transfered to city hall

  15. I would have to say, I was very disappointed in the way things went down for the Kelly Price concert. I feel that whoeverwas calling the shots that day didn't give things enough time before they decided to cancel. I found out the next day, that Kelly Price did come to City Hall and performed 2 songs because she wasn't willing to give back the money that was paid. I don't blame her, she held up her end of the contract, she showed up! I don't know who was in charge of making this decision and I would have to agree that things were not communicated well at all. I was one who went to the park for the concert at 7:45 and it was only a handful of people there for a concert that was suppose to start at 8! There needs to be better clarification for the residents and I felt that the City wasted a whole lot of money! I feel that better preparation and a rain plan should be in effect for all future events, I do understand that some of the people that were in charge, this was their first time in doing such an event, but at the same time, isn't there paperwork or a blueprint of how events were planned in the past? Someone should have been able to follow the same outline as before. Also, some of us have to realize that the week of July 4th we were in the middle of a heatwave, so, I can understand why some of those activities were not the same as before.

  16. The blueprints and paperwork if there were ever such a thing, probably went with the people that were let go on Friday the 13th.

  17. Has anyone ever asked Mayor Linder why his administration has hired NON-CHESTER residents to such important positions as Communications Director, Solicitor, Chief of Staff, etc.?

    ReplyDelete
  18. What's the next event the city is providing? Last year they had family nights for the kids are they still having that?

    ReplyDelete
  19. why is Mayor Linder riding around the city like a cop in a new truck with police lights and is NOT a TAX PAYING resident in the city oh, no one on council pays taxes one lives in public housing. Plan an event can't do but spend tax payers money will do spend every dime. And not on the people!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is the Mayor ridin around in the Brand New Truck and still receiving a car allowance? All of council receives a car allowance.

  22. Reading the comments posted is a sad commentary. It is so easy to play Monday morning quarterback. It's also easy to sit back and say what should have been done. I attended the 4th of July events and I thought they were nice. I assumed the crowd was light because of heat. The City honored the Veterans at 10am...it was a first. They also honored a Police Officer who saved the life of a child. The schedule of events for July 4th was in the Daily Times. It was also posted on Facebook along with Kelly Price concert. When planning events there has to be activities that appeal to everyone, children, teenagers, adults and seniors. Everything is subjective. Sometimes people sound really ignorant with their comments. John Linder, Portia West and Liz Williams and the other elected officials are doing a fine job. How can you assess the their performance based on one event. Guess the complainers are perfect and get everything right. Give me a break. There are a number of good things happening in the City.
