Making Chester a Destination you'd want to visit

Council Members look at ways to make Chester a place people want to visit.
Among concerns raised during Tuesday’s meeting:

  • Chester needs to capitalize on its location as the center of the Philadelphia and Wilmington
  • The need to meet demand for student housing.
  • Promoting the arts in downtown
  • Creating continuity of services for every community and collaboration with other municipalities for large projects
Okay, I’ll come clean. This isn’t about Chester at all.
I simply deleted a few words from a larger article about West Chester and was surprised how a town that seems to have it all has found that they need to do the same things we need to do.

  1. I mentioned before I was looking to solve problems like these and that will be coming hopefully by next weekend at the latest once I tidy somethings up. It will deal mostly with 1, 3 and the first part of 4 on your list.

As a sneak hint to what I'm talking about, a few months back I realized that access and information (sometimes access to information) is really a burden to the city. I'm hoping to fix that by taking inventory in a never thought of way. When it's ready I'll be sure that you are among the first to know.

  4. You'd need to do a whole lot more than just four bullet points. Safety being one of them!

  5. As a well-traveled military veteran and city volunteer (Chamber of Commerce) in a few cities around the country, one of the most important keys to how your city is perceived by visitors and the commmunity itself, are the entrance and exit access points; for Chester it's 291, 9th Street(Route 13), Highland Avenue, Kerlin Street, and all I-95 ramps to name a few. These points should at all times be cleaned and spruced, well-lit, and visible signs to point people in the right direction.
What good is a gas station, if you are not supplying any - near exit/entrance (namely Kerlin and I-95)? All the bridges overtown that cross I-95 look horrible (rust and old fencing)...this is a major gateway to "Our" city...simple comestic changes make a difference too.
Although the 4 above mentioned bullets are fine, attitude and mindset must begin to change, along with bi-partisin government action and support on the local and county levels, and the neighborhoods as well.
If any city official would like fresh, new ideas from a born-and-raised, in Chester and concerned citizen, I am available to volunteer my time to develop plans, strategies and ideas.

    1. When they approved the Auto Zone to be built at 9th and Edgmont, I knew they didn't care about Gateways to the City.

Please don't wait by the phone.

  7. With deep water all year, Chester could easily become a hub for cruise ships. Close to the airport and t rain service make it easy to get here. Also tear down the aging Riverbridge area and put up an amusment pier or River Front Mall, between Harrhs and the Soccar Stadium.
