Is School Funding Politically Motivated?

Congratulations to Upper Darby schools.
Today’s Daily Times states...
State Sen. Ted Erickson, R- 7, of Newtown Square, state Rep. Nicholas Micozzie, R- 163, of Upper Darby and state Rep. Margo Davidson, R- 164, of Upper Darby, at the urging of constituents, have been working to convince (Gov) Corbett to increase funding in the state budget to support education.

Chester has a republican Senator but doesn’t have two republican state Reps and our constituents don’t compare in numbers or sophistication to the Upper Darby faithful who have stormed the capitol these last few months.
Does our democratic state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland have the ear of the governor as the republican state Reps seem to have? Is he working as hard as they are? Our only clue comes out of what the Daily Times reports and there hasn’t been much to read on his success in the paper.
Is there any chance that funding will be restored in Chester-Upland school district to keep schools from closing or consolidating? Or do Chester schools need to close and consolidate?

  1. Chester's state senator is Hon. Dominic Pileggi who is a republican and the Senate Majority Leader. That's the most powerful person in the Senate. If he doesn't have the republican Governor's ear, no one does. He outranks Upper Darby's state senator. If Upper Darby's getting more relief from Harrisburg than Chester there's a reason besides political party.

  2. ....and that reason is "Charter Schools". Gov. corbett and Sen. pileggi have vested intetest in the charter schools in Chester. Their biggest backer "Vaughn" owns the charter schools. You do the math, it behooves them to see this charter school program succeed. They're politicians, this "take money(more than normal decrease $20 mil) the public schools and let the charter schools flourish idea" haa probably been in place before corbett got in office. Its just now the gov is a republican and sen majority leader is a republican , so the plan is taking full flight. PILEGGI IS FOR CHESTER, JUST NOT THE PEOPLE OF CHESTER!

  3. http://delcotompaine.blogspot.com/2005/08/continuing-exploitation-of-chester-by.html?m=1 this was written in 2005, it almost seems foreseeing. Only thing is you switch out the names of the politicians. YES school funding(or lack there of) is politically motivated. Kirkland is a fish in a pool of sharks, not giving him a pass but he doesn't have what it take to play with them. Not by himself anyway.

  4. Just let the High School kids move on to other school districts.

  5. Nope, can't do that, won't do that. The ONLY city in Delaware County should have it own high school/school district. Even if you're not helping the fight, do not cease your support for the district. Or put out "defeated" comments.

  6. Stefan, your write-up got me to thinking...could you do an interview with Rep. Kirkland and pick his brain on the issues and questions some of us have. It is election year and I believe that you would do a much better job than the daily times. "Ear to the street"
