Pileggi forces refineries to clean up their mess

Harrisburg have been accused of not doing enough to prevent the closure of the refineries down the street.
No one really knows what’s going on behind closed doors, but it’s clear that Senator Pileggi keeps his pen nearby.
Earlier, he penned legislation to make refinery land attractive to buyers by creating Keystone Opportunity Zones.
Now, he appears to be putting pressure on the refineries by legislating that they conduct environmental remediation (aka, clean the acres of polluted land) if they reduce the workforce by 65%, idle more than 65% of the existing facilities, or stop using 65% of the overall facility.
Clever!
Environmental remediation ain’t cheap. The owners will have to seriously think twice before they downsize. It could be a very expensive decision.

  1. Sunoco would need to spend a fortune. It would cost millions to clean up the area where the mercury plants stood
