Widener University Celebrates Constitution Day 2011

Chester, Pa.—Widener University will celebrate Constitution Day 2011 with events on September 16 and 20 at the Main Campus in Chester.

On Friday, Sept. 16, Widener School of Law Professor John Culhane, director of Widener’s nationally recognized Health Law Institute, will present a lecture titled “Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Citizenship, Marriage Equality, and the Constitution” at 11:30 a.m. in the University Center Webb Room.

Professor Culhane has written more than two dozen articles for legal journals on a wide range of topics including the rights of same-sex couples. Culhane edited and contributed to a book titled Reconsidering Law and Policy Debates: A Public Health Perspective which addresses the public health dimensions of charged political topics such as reproductive rights, marriage equality, racial justice and equity, gun policy, domestic violence, death and dying, and tort law and punitive damages. He has also been featured regularly in national and local broadcast and print media including National Public Radio, ABC News, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Dissent,  WHYY-TV, Slate.com and 365Gay.com.

The event is sponsored by the Political Engagement Committee and the Office for Community Engagement and Diversity Initiatives.

On Tuesday, September 20, Delaware Attorney General Joseph R. “Beau” Biden III will speak at 3:30 p.m. in Lathem Hall.

As Attorney General, Biden created the Child Predator Unit within the Department of Justice, and the Child Predator Task Force in partnership with 43 law enforcement agencies across the state. Dedicated to keeping kids safe in their homes, in the community, and online, the Task Force has led more than 100 investigations since its inception, and has delivered a message of Internet safety to thousands of students throughout Delaware. Biden also successfully pushed for tough new mandatory prison sentences for child predators and distributors of child pornography.

He is a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard and served a year-long deployment supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq from October 2008 to September 2009. In 2001, Biden served as Interim Legal Advisor for the United States Department of Justice in post-war Kosovo, helping the war-torn nation develop a law enforcement and criminal justice system.

The event is sponsored by Widener Young Democrats, the Widener University Chapter of the NAACP, the Black Student Union, and Women on the Verge.

Both events are free and open to the public.
