  1. Why would I pay $200 for information that is free from the SBDC?

And another thing, if government entities like the SBA and PA are invilved in the program, they are not even allowed to charge.

*sheesh* y r ppl always tryina get over?

  2. If you think Entrepreneur Works is trying to get over, they better start doing a better job of promoting themselves.

EW is an amazing resource in Chester. There are less than 6 microlending organizations in the country, and EW is one of them.

The SBDC is a great service, and they share an office suite with EW, but SBDC picks up where EW ends.

For $200, EW offers an 8 week curriculum where you meet twice a week to learn every aspect of starting a business. It's perfect for folks who have an idea they want to turn into a business and for folks who have a business and need to step back to find out how to run it better.

You will leave the EW classes with a business plan that you write. Many people came to EW and never started their business because they learned that their idea wasn't so good after all.

EW makes small business loans available, and microloans starting at $500, which a normal startup could never qualify for.

The resources of EW are with you long after the class ends for advice and counsel.

You can take a free class here and there at SBDC on various business topics but even their staff would point you to EW to get the full scope of all aspects of starting a business that you need to know to as a new or prospective business owner.

Often, EW offers scholarships for Chester residents who qualify and their payment plan is flexable for their classes.

If you are interersted in starting a business, EW is the place to start.

  3. Stephan,

I see u riding for EW and that's groovy and all but I always take issue with people who ask people to pay for services that are free.

and, I don't know where you get your information from, but there are many more than 6 micro lending institutions in the country. more importantly, there are institutions that have free business plan development services; and, institutions who offer a grant in the form of awards in business plan competitions.

one could go to the PA Fund Finder to find out more information.

and, I stand by what I said about not charging when gov entities attend an event. if EW needs funding then they should just seek funding properly. $200 for chester residents is outrageous.

and, yes, i do agree they should do more marketing too. but, good luck with that.

  4. I get my information from being associated with EW for over eight years. I'm a graduate of their classes and now a consultant on their staff.

I understand that it is difficult to understand the value of EW from the flyer alone. I'm going to personally work with them on improving the marketing material.

In a nutshell, EW is not a 'how to write a business plan' seminar. It is an entire course of basics required to start a business.

The $200 is a bargain for the instruction you receive. Education is not free and people don't work for free. A $200 investment in a business seminar is just that, an investment. Start a business and write off the $200 as an expense. That's what business people do.

You would run yourself ragged trying to attend free seminars that covered all the material you receive in this course. And none of them are going to give you access to lawyers, accountants, marketing folks, loan specialist, and a bunch of free business events just for attending their seminar.

There may be a million micro lending organizations out there somewhere, but we're talking about Chester. We have an established one right here. We are fortunate to have them here in Chester (they have branches in Darby and Phila, too).

EW receives adequate funding to have stayed around all these years.

Why should Chester residents take a 32 hours business course for free? Even Delaware County Community College will charge $94 an hour and they don't have a course that comes close to what is offered at EW.

If you are not looking to start a business, don't comment on EW. If you are looking to start a business, it's the best $200 you'll ever spend.
