Does Chester have a political party identity crisis?

In all the years I’ve spent in Chester, the battle cry has been, if you want to get things done in this city, you have to be a Republican.
Yet, in today’s Daily Times, Republican candidate Rev. William “Rocky” Brown, says that his loss to Democrat Thaddeus Kirkland for State Rep is due to the fact that “we couldn’t beat the tide of the movement. It was a clear indication that people were not voting on the individual. They were voting strictly by party, especially the city of Chester. They were basically voting straight Democrat.”

So, is the power party in Chester the Republicans or the Democrats? What’s your opinion?

  1. Yes, Chester has a political Party identity crisis. People register as Republican because it has always been a Republican town. But when they go to the polls, they vote Democratic.

  2. I feel as though this is a problem all over though, not just in the City of Chester. I live in Eddystone where it has always been an issue of "register republican" otherwise you wouldn't be able to get anything done. you'd be shunned if you were trying to have permits issued, extensions ect... I am registered republican and voted almost voted for all democrats this election. Although with the ER4PC helping Eddystone, and also with Kirkland on our side, I see this borough turning blue regardless of what identity our current council portrays. Each and everyone of them when their term is up, will no longer represent this borough. we have a long fight along the river, and we'll keep the battle up regarldess of our party of choice.

  3. I wish people would let me know what the Dems are doing to get my vote, i see a lot of positive things happening with our city under Mayor Butler and the Republicans dating back to 1998. Now I not saying that they have been the best but I would not like to see what would happen if they were not in place.

  4. I was born and raised here in Chester,, which means I was also educated here, and the previous mayor's who some were republican, at least the mayors' who did for this city was, but in doing "things" for this city EDUCATION HAS SUFFERED MORE AND MORE, I have seen Democratic mayor's come in and cause scandal and do "things" and the educational system again suffered..I say this to say that property taxes (which are to be used for education) continued to rise and more and more of our city was rented out to pollution plants, businesses have packed up and left, more forgien businesses have opened tax free(no financial help for the city) neighborhoods decline, people became hopeless. My point is in this city you have to be republican to gain city empployment, and to have some things done, Kirkland has done nothing in 17yrs for this city but surrounding boroughs have benefited from him being in office(but he is always around for the credit)Mayor Butler until recently(last Summer) fell in with the usual Politico's that have been blindedly elected into office. This city because of most of it's people is a safe haven for anyone with political asperations to EXPLOTE ALL OF US(wheather we voted for them or against them) because the masses don't educate themselves on who is asking to explote...I mean lead our city and they vote for the person with the bling and tossing a few scraps during the election season. And don't mention that Casino or Soccer Stad. because they are in a city where there are few jobs and only 2% of the city's residents have been hired. Due to poor advetising or setting the bar at unattainable. But welcomes these same people to come spend all there money in these places...did I mention the ramps being built so the patrons of these places do not have to ride through the city(which means they don't spend money in the businesses in the city along they way) Oh and Kirkland was a BIG PART OF THAT ONE!! Our on Representatives don't look out for us and they keep voting them back in..(Soccer game day traffic) that's all folks!

  5. Funny that you mention that Kirkland has done nothing over the past 18 years. Key word 18 years!!! He must be doing something right if he is getting elected into his position with landslide numbers. Instead of being a bitter person in the community, if you think that you can do a better job than what he is doing then you should put together a campaign and run against him. Instaed of saying what he hasnt done. I could go on and on and on telling you how many people and organizations that he has helped over the years.
