SURVEY RESULTS: Are student uniforms working in the Chester Schools?

This survey question can be interpreted several ways. It could mean:
  1. Is the uniform code being complied to? In other words, are the kids wearing the uniforms to school everyday?
  2. Are the uniforms serving the purpose they were meant to serve (which I’m not completely sure what the purpose is).
  3. Are the uniforms creating better students?
From what I see, all the students are wearing the proper color shirt and pants. Does the uniform policy extend to tucking shirts in, wearing belts, showing underwear and cleavage, and the rate of looseness and tightness? If so, I’m curious what percentage of the student uniforms are worn correctly.
What is the purpose of the uniform? Is it to identify what school you attend or the grade you are in? Is it a way to limit the amount of clothes a parent buys a child? Does a parent purchase less school clothes if the child is wearing a uniform?
Is the purpose of the uniform to create a better classroom atmosphere where teasing and bullying over personal wardrobe is eliminated? If so, has teasing and bullying decreased?
In my opinion, the school uniform has also created a street uniform where most of the boys wear the same thing in and out of school. The sense of everyone having a set of ‘play clothes’, ‘school clothes’, and ‘church clothes’ are long gone as all the guys wear the same plain outfits everywhere they go, even though they may add a little color to it.
The girls are different. Their sense of fashion outside of school does change considerably from what they wear in school and girls seem to seek their own fashion identity as opposed to wearing what all the other girls are wearing.
The ultimate sense of high school freedom of expression has to be a home basketball game at the ‘Clip Joint’. The jaw dropping outfits our youth wear to the games may be the deciding factor on why we must keep a uniform policy during school hours.

Having been out of high school for over 30 years when we wore what ever we wanted to wear to school, I guess I just missed the trigger that led to the uniform policy in public schools.
From the survey results, you certainly believe that the uniforms are a good thing and I don’t see them going away anytime soon.
What do you think?

  1. I think if the students were actually "in uniform", and they took pride in that uniform, we'd see a difference in the way they carried themselves in school and in the street. Being in uniform means looking alike (everybody wearing the same thing, without exception - like in the military), which is what I believe school officials try to achieve. Theoretically, uniformity, or looking alike, would allow students to enter the learning environment unhindered by obvious economic differences, and would, supposedly, cut down on bullying (as you mentioned, Stefan). Uniform policies are obviously not well-thought-out, nor are they enforced in our district, judging by what we see in the street (I see cleavage, butt cracks, "tramp stamps", and everything else walking down the street towards the high school). Poorly planned policies that are not enforced are not taken seriously and, basically, make our school district look ridiculous.

  2. I wondered how long you were going to keep up with this Chester school surveys. We did your survey:

    Out of 64 students

36% said yes lets keep them

64% said no let students dress as they please

Yes by now the students wear their uniforms to school everyday so uniform codes are being complied to. Some maybe a little sloppy but I haven't had to ask anyone to pull their pants up this year. So they are getting much better at wearing them and the rules are being enforced.

Uniforms are serving the purpose they were meant to serve. I thought the purpose was to wear neutral colors that do not represent a particular group associated with violence. Everyone wears the same colors, no fuss, no fighting. I am sure the amount of incidents has dropped because of the uniform policy.

Are uniforms creating a better student? Maybe taking pride in someway but I will let my voters speak for themselves.

I will tell you this much. I wished I wore uniforms. This would save me a ton of time in the mornings.

  3. I think they are creating better students but most likely in a slow pace. Kids come to school everyday with their uniforms on, only few think they can come to school wearing what they want.

  4. Yes, the uniform code is working in Chester High. The students may wear them how they want to wear them but they are still wearing them successfully. The students also think that the colors are suitable. The uniforms are successfully making the students better.

  8. I think that uniforms are working and we should keep them because that way we don't need to find something different to wear everyday. And no one can talk about you because we are all wearing the same thing. Thats why I think we should keep uniforms and they are working.

  9. ARE UNIFORMS CREATING A BETTER STUDENTS? MAYBE BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS DOESN'T WEAR UNIFORM, IT TAKES PRIDE& WE HAVE 2 WEAR THE SAME COLORS....

  14. Yes because people are still wearing uniforms and they help because you don't have to worry about people saying what they dont like about your clothes.

  15. Yes because children will come to school any kind of way and inappropriate but no because I really dont like uniforms but they are appropriate for school and need to be kept in the district.

  16. No Because Students Rather Wear Street Clothes Then Uniforms . They Get Mad When We Have To Wear Uniforms, And I Think Thats Part Of What Make There Grades Go Down, their attitudes.

  17. I don't think the uniforms are making better students but it lets us know that we can't get in without wearing it. Should the uniforms be banned? It depends on what school and how the students carry themselves.

  18. I don't believe that the uniforms are making any improvement on the students because they still were the uniforms any kind of way.

  19. I think uniforms are some what changing the students. It kind of make the students look at each other as if they are the same not knowing who has more money then any other student because they all look well dress the same. Uniforms are a good thing I like them.

  20. I THINK THAT THE UNIFORMS ARE NOT CREATING BETTER CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY JUST THINK ITS SOME TYPE OF JOKE NOT FOLLOWING SCHOOL RULES AND WEARING WHAT THEY WANT WHEN THEY WANT I THINK THEY DO IT TO JUST GET SENT HOME.

  21. i think that the students want to ware there stuff they like and not uniform. i think the student whould be more focest in school if they were in their own skin they also will have one less rule to follow and i think that we have to meny to follow that is why student do not go to class because of all the rule think that we should be able to ware our stuff and have our phones.

  22. I think that the uniform is creating better students because the students are learning to be young ladies and gentlemen by respecting the school uniforms and by wearing the uniform with pride, so I like the uniforms.

  23. um I would have to say that uniforms are some what working for us because of the simple fact that uniforms are not really even uniforms anymore they are being dressed up and dressed down by the students not saying that there are anything wrong with that but sometimes it does cause a distraction between students and sometimes even fights. Then again it better than wearing regular close to school because not even one is as fortunate as ever one else and not ever one is as nice about it so having these uniforms are stopping a lot of fights and taking a lot of stress of the students wearing if we didn’t have a uniform we would always have to go buy new clothes and shoes and other stuff breaking our pockets and our parents so I say it a two way street here.

  26. I Think The Uniforms Are Working, I Just Think That They Should Have More Choices In What To Wear. Being As Though We Should Have Other Colors Beside Navy Blue White And Tan To Choose From.

  27. I think that the students should were the uniforms for safety reason. Many people are less fortunate than others.

  28. No I think we should wear regular clothes everyday because other school districts wear regular clothes and not uniforms.

  29. i think that we should keep the uniforms. They are working fine to me.

  30. I think that the uniforms is creating better students because the students representing their schools. They also see that you dont have to wear street clothes to look nice for school. You can wear your uniform and make your uniform look nice.

  31. I think having the uniform is better because you never know if some kids have clothes to wear all year around. Also when wearing the uniform it is also teaching young people to follow rules.

  32. Yes,I do beleive the uniforms are making our schools better. I think so because its helping us students get here on time and it prevents students from teasing others for what they wear because were wearing the same thing.

  33. I THINK UNIFORM IS GOOD BECAUSE MOST SCHOOLS THATS LETTING THERE STUDENTS WEAR ANYTHING TO SCHOOL.SOME STUDENTS ARE GETTING PICKING ON BECAUSE THE CLOTHES ISNT NICE AS THE OTHER PERSON.THATS WHY I THINK ITS GOOD FOR SCHOOLS TO WEAR UNIFORM. FOR LESS PEOPLE TO GET PICK ON AND EVERYBODY IS EQUAL.

  34. No because some people still wear what they want and people still get talked about they still can tell and say if they are less fortunate and fortunate, and I dont think uniforms change how students act because clothes cant change people and they still act like wild animals, I like the uniforms but I dont think they are working in chester schools.

  35. The uniforms make us look professional, smart and good hard working student so yes schools should keep the uniforms beacuse...some people and students wouldnt know how to dress proper for school.

    ReplyDelete
  36. no because I feel as though they should be able to express themsevles in the exspectations of wearing their clothes and it also express how they are. You wont be able to see that if we all are wearing the same clothes everyday.

  37. I think that uniforms are creating better students because students know that they have to dress a certain way and not how they look on the streets, uniforms make the kids look presentable and neat, it also saves money for some people even though I dont like them. It makes the students look as one but different because some kids accessorise their outfits.

  38. I think the uniform is a better plan because it saves time and is helpful to the people that doesnt have a lot of clothes to wear in and out of school. But either way, like me, students are going to put the fashion from what they wear outside inside school to the uniforms. I also think uniforms pervent less cleavage and other dressing in school.

  40. I think, as a CHS alumni, C/O 05, and as a mother to a preschooler, the uniforms were working then, and are working now. I know as a freshman at CHS, my mother didn't have a lot of money so "regular clothes" for myself and my 3 sisters were all but abundant. We did what we could, but I always wished for more than what I had. When the uniforms came into effect, we could then spend that money on shoes and extras to accent the uniform, which made it a little better for me personally. The skirts were still a bit expensive at about $40 a piece, but those turned into hand-me-downs, so my sisters didn't suffer as much. :)

Now, now as a mother to 2 boys (easier to shop for), it's a breeze! The eldest is only 4 so none of the the preschoolers care now, but in about 6-10 years, the boys will start up with the "I have Jordans and you don't" thing, and we can deal with that then. For now, it's khaki pants and a navy polo with whatever long-sleeved shirt I can find to keep him warm underneath. I just wish daycares would incorporate the uniform's for my 2 year old!

I think they eliminate some, not all, clothing/money issues in school with peers, and they have a neater appearance than that of what the students might where otherwise. You will always have the ones that dress out of the norm, be it promiscuous or goth, but they're gonna do that regardless. It's overall a great thing.
