Chester is so Trashy - But getting a Clean Up

Residents, business owners and community groups come together to cleanup Chester

Chester, PA – The Mayor’s 8th Annual Citywide Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, August 28, 2010 (rain date: September 11) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Hundreds of volunteers will disburse throughout the city for this citywide cleanup from Swarthmore College, Widener University, Eastern University, Chester-Wallingford Red Cross, Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack, the Delaware County Housing Coalition, MinSec, Delaware County Community Service and local churches. The volunteers will focus on vacant lots, playgrounds and neighborhood streets, picking up debris, and cutting grass and high weeds. 
“Our goal is to promote a better quality of life as we help clean and beautify the City,” stated Mayor Butler.  “This is a citywide event and we encourage all residents to come out and participate in making Chester a cleaner place.”  
Registration for event will kick off at 8:30 am at Chester City Hall, 1 Fourth Street, with a brief message from Mayor Butler. Volunteers can then pick up trash bags, gloves, safety vests, brooms, shovels and rakes, all provided by the Mayor’s Office.  Other equipment, such as gas blowers, lawn mowers and pruning shears were also available for use that day.  At the conclusion of the cleanup volunteers will meet back at City Hall at 12:30 pm for lunch, provided by the Mayor’s Office. 
For the first time ever, a grand prize will be awarded to the block captain who secures the most participation from Chester residents from their respective community. The participants from the winning cleanup neighborhood will receive Philadelphia Union tickets and a chartered bus to the game on September 4, 2010.
The Mayor’s Annual Cleanup is made possible through the help of local businesses and volunteers. It is designed to promote a better quality of life and to encourage all residents to participate in making their city a cleaner, better place.

ALSO...
More than 100 Immaculata University students will spend today (August 28) sprucing up the St. Katharine Drexel parish chapel, at 2nd and Norris streets in Chester. The effort is part of the university's First-Year Experience Program. Other students will work at Tacony Creek Park and Cobbs Creek Park.
