Delaware County 4-H Features Local Artist and a Variety of Camping Opportunities

Award-winning watercolor landscape artist and art teacher, Deena Ball, will take up “residence” for one week this summer at the 4-H Farm and Education Center in Newtown Square. A graduate of Colby College in Maine, Deena has additional training at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and with prominent local artists. Deena exhibits at many juried national and regional shows and at several galleries. In addition, she is active in the local art community as a faculty member at Wayne Art Center, Community Art Center and Main Line Art Center.

Young people ages 8-13 (as of 1/1/10) may learn and create with Deena during 4-H Summer Specials Day Camp, July 19-22 at the 4-H Farm on Bishop Hollow Road. Two classes will be offered: Mixtures, Magic & Potions from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and Farm Art Animals from 12:30-2:30 p.m. In Mixtures, science and art collide. You’ll learn to create your own paint from food while learning about color mixing and the history of paint. Magically marbleize paper with oil and water, experiment with picture lifting collages, natural plant pattern printing and create your own clay and chalk. Using a variety of materials (pastels, charcoal, pencils, paints and clay), campers in Farm Art Animals will observe, learn, draw, paint and sculpt the chickens, sheep, horses and cows that live at the 4-H Farm. In addition to observing and creating art, we will discuss the domestication of these animals and various depictions of farm animals throughout art history.

Critters in Your Backyard is another new camp program offered this summer. Campers will go creek-stomping on the grounds of the 4-H Farm to learn and explore the world of predator and prey. Many other day camp sessions are available at the 4-H Farm. Projects include: Archery, Woodworking, Rocketry & Boomerangs, Farm Animal Care, and Horse lessons. Each project meets Monday through Thursday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m.; horse programs begin at 9 a.m. The popular 4-H Candy Making project will be offered in the air conditioned meeting room at Smedley Park, Springfield. Two sessions will be available: a beginner class for youth ages 8-13 and an advanced class for youth 10-13. Class times for Candy Making will be 10 a.m.-12 noon and 1-3 p.m. respectively, which allows enough time for parents to drop off one child at the 4-H farm and one at Smedley Park, if necessary.

The cost for each class is $50. Financial assistance may be available for resource stressed families. All materials will be provided and class size is limited. Extended day child care is also available for an additional fee during two of the weeks.
