Chester Youth Council 'Lights on for a Safe Chester Campaign'

I stopped at the Sunoco APlus on 9th and Kerlin before heading to work and a bunch of teens in red shirts looked like they were collecting when they were actually giving stuff away.  Chester Youth Council program manager Deitra Sewell (in purple) had her crew well coordinated as they politely handed out boxes of energy saving light bulbs.

To learn more about what they were doing, here’s the text from the flyer they handed out explaining the program.

The young men and women of the Chester Youth Council had a BRIGHT IDEA and we need your help.
We are encouraging Chester residents to turn on their outside lights between 9pm and 6am to help reduce violence and loitering in your neighborhoods.
To show our dedication we have partnered with PECO to offer FREE energy efficient CFL light bulbs to all residents who pledge to help us with our efforts.
Why Should I help?
People are less likely to loiter and/or commit acts of crime in well lit areas.
Families who routinely use their porchand/orback lights report a greater senseof safety.
The use of energy efficient lighting helps save energy and money.
By turning on your light you can help to ‘Take Back Your Community’.
Because we can’t stop the violence alone, We Need You!
The Chester Youth Council, “Dedicated to changing perspective and inspirign youth action in our community.
