Chester Police Expected to Enforce Curfew to curb violence

CHESTER - Police remind parents, youngsters and business owners that despite the warm weather and upcoming summer break, the city's curfew remains in effect.

The curfew pertains to people 17-years-old and younger. The hours of the curfew are 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Business owners are also reminded that they are not to permit minors in their establishments during curfew hours unless a parent accompanies them.

Teenagers leaving a place of employment are permitted to travel unaccompanied to return home.

  1. I know the city police is overburdened with the duties and responsibilities they are expected to perform and enforcing the curfew adds to that burden. The kids that are gathering on the streets with the begining of summer tend to have no respect for law enforcement or the adults in the community. However, I do believe that if police were more visible in the community simply by driving their marked cars through the more densely populated areas routinely it would make enforcing the curfew easier. There have been several housing projects closed for the purpose of building low income housing. As a result families have been relocated to different areas such as 22nd, 23rd and 24th sts. There is no doubt that the curfew is essential since there is a larger number of children in the area.
