3 Black Men Seek Work

It's hard not to feel some kinda way when you hear these 3 men express their frustration trying to find a job.

  1. I am from Chester and I understand the frustration these 3 brothers are feeling. The brother with the various degrees, I think, is just catching a bad break. I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Sometimes you may want to consider a drastic change and try to relocate to where the oppotunities are much greater. I made the decision at the age of 17 left Chester High School and joined the military. In retrospect, it was the most important and best decision that I could've made at that time in my life. The military is not for everyone, just the path that I chose. And as for the woman who told the young man that that he didn't have any experience and to say that he was ignorant.....she has a lot to learn herself. That young man stated that if you train me....I will work. Sometimes that is just the person that will go above and beyond. Any man who is a real man wants to work and take care of his business

  4. The third man is one of the reasons why the people of Chester get a bad rap. He shows up to a job fair with an undershirt on demanding an application and cops an attitude because an employer won't give him one!. He is showing not just that one employer but all other employers within eyeshot of his tirade that he isn't ready.

Employers are fearful of taking on a person that they have to teach so much more than just the skills of the job. He lacks the skills of knowing the physical appearance expected at a job fair, not mouthing off, and accepting rejection. This young man could have had on a polo and would have gotten a better result.

I hope someone at that job fair pulled him to the side and respectfully told him ways he can improve himself to be more successful in the job market. I will not try to minimize that fact that the job market is rough for black men but we as a community know that racism exists out there and we need to work twice as hard to hit common ground. We need to be honest with one another.

The commenter above could be an employer. We can cry about it but what are we going to do about it?

    Am I being harsh?

  5. You are not too harsh. But for clarity sake, the filming was not within earshot of others. The easedropping employer walked away from her table to listen in. The organizers could not have expected 100 degree conditions or else they would have had the fair inside. Just about all the job seekers came as they were. There was little effort to look professional. Maybe all applicants should be filtered through Robert Wrease before they be allowed to talk to an employer? I still find it strange that young folks see a Polo shirt as well dressed, but they do. Although our guy may still have a lot to learn on how to present himself at an interview, he has become the 'poster child' that articulates today's black rage. We all must pinch in to help.

  6. I think these men could all benefit from taking advantage of the free services available at the PA CareerLink located right in Chester.

  7. CareerLink was at the job fair. Hopefully they did take advantage of their services.

  10. I understand that the weather conditions made it difficult for some but not everyone to dress more professionally. We can both agree that a polo shirt is not business attire and we can probably also agree that it is a step above a wife-beater. I’m not sure who Robert Wrease is but I am not saying that people need to be screened before going to a job fair. But this does bring up an issue that people need to learn about proper business skills, attire, speech, etc before looking for employment. At the end of the day no one is going to care if he is suffering with black rage. They will just refuse him a job. Was anyone able to help him with this? Maybe he could go to CareerLink and learn some job skills.
