Swarthmore College’s entire incoming Class of 2016 will volunteer at local nonprofits and community service organizations on Fri., Aug. 31, as part of their orientation activities, marking the first time the College has organized a community service effort of this size for first-year students.

What You Might Not Know About Generic Drugs
Across the nation, dozens of lawsuits against manufacturers of generic drugs have been dismissed because of a decision by the Supreme Court a year ago that makes it all but impossible to sue them for failing to provide adequate warning of a drug's dangers.
Attorney Gary Leppla, who represented the family of a young woman who had an adverse reaction to a drug and died, says it's critical to know what your health insurance plan tells your pharmacist to do.

Chester Upland Cyber Academy - The Good, The Bad, The Questions
The school district announced the opening of a Cyber Academy for the new school year. Any student living within the district can enroll immediately and start their studies in September at home with a district provided Dell laptop.
On Monday night, an information session was held to address the questions and concerns of folks interested in the new cyber school. I attended and walked away with the following opinions.
Book Bag Give-Away a huge Success
On Sunday, August 26, 2012, The Better Living Center held a soft opening with a Book Bag Give-Away in Chester, PA.
The Community response was overwhelming with 450 Delaware County residents standing in line as early as 11:30 am for a 2:00 pm start time.
The BLC gave away over 170 book bags with school supplies.

Buono Brothers Bakery closing was no secret...to this Blog
I was told on Friday, June 22 that Buono Bakery was closing, but I promised not to announce it on the blog until the 24th when the rest of the employees in the bakery would be notified.
Officially, they say they’re not closing. But they haven’t baked a roll in Chester all summer.
People lost their jobs, rolls aren’t being baked in Chester, but the company is still in business.
I guess Chester is supposed to be excited about this?

I’ve admitted to not understand most of the Chester Upland School District legal squabbles these last few months. But there is one thing I’m clear on. Their latest settlement with the state has rendered them powerless.
The state has made it quite plain that they would take over the school district one way or another.

Chester testing for West NIle Virus
The City of Chester Bureau of Health is working with officials from Penn State Cooperative to conduct testing throughout Chester for mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus as a precautionary measure and as a part of ongoing efforts throughout Delaware County.
To date, no infected mosquitos have been found within the Chester City boundaries. Further testing will take place on Wednesday, August, 22nd, 2012 at 1:00PM. Results will be released to the public upon receipt.

Charles Byrd Sr. R.I.P.
Today’s obit in the Daily Times made no mention of the C. Haywood Byrd that brought so much joy to many Chester High School basketball players for many years.
Coach Byrd was the Junior Varsity coach for Chester High School basketball in the 70’s and early 80’s and probably had the best winning percentage ever.
It’s been 35 years since I played on one of his undefeated teams and whenever I run into a team mate, the first thing we do is imitate Coach Byrd and share a hearty laugh. He was one of the funniest men I’ve ever known. He worked us hard and made us laugh even harder.
In his slow southern lilt, he called us all by nicknames he created, had the most ridiculous names for plays, rebounds, fast breaks, rebounds, and everything else. I can still hear him hollering at me as I dribbled down the court...”Deal Stiffy, Deal!”
Those who experienced C. Haywood Byrd are saddened by his death but I bet there are a lot of smiles and laughter occurring as a result of our memories.

Robin Thicke, Chrisette Michele, Drew Chambers
The Dell East was at its best last night at the Robin Thicke show.
On a perfect evening for an outside concert, a strong turnout came to hear Philly’s Leah Smith open on keyboards singing a few sweets songs with a great pair of percussionist backing her.
Drew Chambers, a Charlotte crooner, sung to tracks and blew the crowd away closing with the very difficult Adele song, Rolling in the Deep. Check him out on YouTube.
I don’t think I’ve ever missed a Chrisette Michele visit to Philly. Once again, she didn’t disappoint.
I had my fill after Chrisette and could have got home early, but I was curious what Robin Thicke would bring. I’m not a fan but I have to admit that he gave a great performance.
In these days of stars showing up in white tee shirts and sagging denim, to see Thicke in a very nice custom suit, dress shoes, and well coifed hair was quite refreshing.
Chester doesn't have Gas Wars
When the cost of gas on one side of the street is $3.59 and the other side $3.72, why do I feel guilty when I’m the only one filling up at $3.59 and there’s a bunch of cars getting the $3.72 gas?
PA ACLU: Fight on State Voter ID Law Doesn't Stop Here
HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Supreme Court is the next stop for the state's voter I.D. law after a state judge refused to block it, and plaintiffs' attorneys vowed to continue their fight.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Pennsylvania had filed suit, claiming the law would make it disproportionately harder for seniors, minorities and others to get the identification documents they'd need to vote in the November election.

Widener University Trustees Extend Contract of President James Harris
August 14, 2012 (Chester, Pa.) – The trustees of Widener University will extend the contract of President James T. Harris III for another five years beyond its current expiration date. The contract extension was announced by Board of Trustees Chairman Nicholas Trainer today and will extend Dr. Harris’s role as president through June 30, 2017.
“President Harris’s strong and inspiring vision for Widener University to become a leading metropolitan institution is matched only by his approach to lead us toward a future in which our university is recognized as one of the most dynamic and civically committed universities in the country,” said Trainer. “The trustees are confident that Dr. Harris is the best president for Widener University at this time in our history and delighted he has agreed to this extension.”

Weeks after signing the 'Save the School District' settlement with the State in Federal Court, the Chester-Upland School District has decided it will appeal the State's Charter Appeal Board decision to approve the Chester Charter School for the Arts in State Commonwealth Court.
Please reread that sentence again before moving on. Does it sound as crazy to you as it does to me?

Who would have thought that in less than a year as mayor, John Linder would lose his grip on Chester politics?
When he and his city council comrades were overwhelmingly elected to office in November, the voters finally got the change they were seeking for so long.
But, it seems the business minded and cohesive republicans have been replaced by aimless and devisive democrats.

If you love basketball, Haverford College was the place to be for the championship game of the Delco Pro Am summer league.
The Champs vs TYGTAL (Take Your Game to Another Level) battled to an exciting 67-62 finish.
Temple University provided the fire power for TYGTAL as Mardy Collins, Dionte Christmas and Mark Tyndale scored all but about a dozen of their team's points.
