SURVEY RESULTS: Did you like Gil Spencer?

Yes 50%
No 50%

In Charles Barkley’s first book ‘I May be Wrong but I Doubt It’, he justifies his public oratory by stating that half the people like it and the other half doesn’t. In his mind, that gives him to okay to keep talking.

Recently retired Daily Times columnist Gil Spencer obviously had the same impact on his readers based on Chester City Blog survey results.

In my circles, most folks couldn’t stand Gil Spencer. It seems that everything he wrote was meant to piss them off. And they’re probably right.

The job of a columnist is to make people yearn for their next column. It’s no accident that great newspapers have great columnist and the great newspaper junkies are attracted to those publications because of those columnist.

Spencer had built such a following that the Daily Times replaced him with 3 new columnist (Christine Flowers, Chris Freind, Jodine Mayberry). Yet, as much as the Daily Times speaks of how race dominates the online comments of their stories, they didn’t bring on a black columnist to engage that part of their readership.

But, you’ve still got me.

I’ve been inspired by the writings of Gil Spencer and the opinion of Charles Barkley to blog about whatever comes to mind on whatever topic that deserves a spin not giving much credence to whether you like it or not.

Others whose style I steal from are Troi Torain, Howard Stern, Joel Mchale, the late Rotan Lee and Reggie Bryant, Michel Martin, Roland Martin, and Dan Rather. If I could be a smidgen as great as any of them at what they do, I’d be satisfied.

  1. This guy is a racist. He wrote negatively about President Obama. Glad to be rid of him.
