Boney James came off the stage and got in my face blowing that sax. I guess he wanted his pic on the Chester City Blog. |
I love ‘straight ahead jazz’ and can only tolerate ‘cool jazz’ for a short period before it all starts to sound the same. But there are some great cool jazz performers who are much better on stage than on their recordings.
Boney James is one of them.
Cool jazz is a favorite among the older crowd who like their instrumental R&B infused rhythms played on real instruments. Unfortunately for them, cool jazz isn’t commercially attractive leaving many radio stations once dedicated to that format out of business - or playing country music.
Occasionally, the popular cool jazz artists perform solo gigs in the area, but most cool jazz is now played at jazz festivals and on cruises.
Boney James brought the funk to the Keswick with his talented band of musicians for a highly charged and entertaining night of live music. His new album has one track that feature vocals by Raheem DeVaughn, but, in his absence, Boney found a singer from Reading who tore it up.
Unless you pay for satellite radio or listen to internet radio, you won’t find too much cool jazz on the radio around here.
Do you like cool jazz? Would you like Philadelphia to bring back a cool jazz radio station?
I've lived in Chester for 22 years. I love cool jazz. I used to listen to WJJZ all of the time, before they removed it. Its amazing that there is not a decent jazz station that one could listen to. Being a former New Yorker, I really miss it.
ReplyDeleteThere's WRTI, 90.1fm, Temple University station. They play jazz from 6p to 6a and from 6a to 6p on their HD station.
DeleteThe point is still playing good jazz music 90.1

There's 106.1-2 fm on HD radio that plays a 24 cool jazz format. I forgot about them. It's free and has very few commercial breaks. But, you gotta have a HD radio.
