Watching Chester beat Coatsville on Saturday was almost ugly. Our guys dominated their guys in every aspect of the game.
Sitting behind the Coatsville bench watching their coach try anything to keep the game respectable made me feel sorry for him because he was totally powerless. At one point, I saw him call time-out, walk out on the court, silently count to 10, walk back to the huddle, and yell and scream the darndest things to his team.
They went back on the court and got trampled some more.
Rondae Jefferson is a rebounding machine. If he continues to work on just rebounding, he can have a very long career being the NBA’s next Dennis Rodman (without the crazy).
That one play where he pulled down the rebound, speed dribbled straight up the court, sliced through all defenders like a hot knife through butter, got to the basket, and hammered it home, was a highlight that could win an ESPY. I found myself calling timeout for Coatsville after that slam.
Offensively, Chester is boring. Sure, an occasional slam dunk or a deep 3-pointer are cool, but no one is putting on a show and giving us 30 points a game. They miss a lot of layups and foul shots. They don’t have that emotional vocal floor leader you normally find on Chester teams. These guys very quietly get the job done.
Defensively, Chester is amazing. And the Chester crowd appreciates it. The team gets a lot of love from Chester fans for their tenacious defense. I’d hate to be an opposing point guard the way Chester bullies them all game long. They’re out rebounding teams by 20 on a regular basis. They may miss 3 layups but they snatch 3 rebounds before they make the shot on the 4th attempt.
Oh, and did someone say full court press? Chester could beat teams by 60 if they pressed all game. And I’m impressed at how they effortlessly beat the other team’s press. These guys are good.
Chester. Not the most exciting team, but the team most likely to beat you by 40 and make you feel like it was okay.
Two games to go.
