Review of "Ethel"

Terry Burrell plays Ethel Waters

Ethel Waters, born of a rape at knifepoint in Chester, raised by a grandmother on Clifton Street in Center City and a hit singer in Harlem clubs in her mid-20s, is not the generally humble person portrayed here in recent years in another one-woman show called His Eye Is on the Sparrow, named for one of Waters' great gospel songs. Maybe that Ethel Waters wasn't so true-to-life, either.
We have a completely different Waters. Ethel! plays on the performer's reputation for distrusting white theater managers and some white colleagues (with justification), for suffering fools unhappily, and for doing things her own way.

  1. Thanks for the review. I think I will skip going to Philly for it.

    1. I sure hope people in Chester will support this play and judge for themselves how good or bad the depiction of Ethel Waters is. Then again folk from Chester prefer to stay in Chester at the corner bars, casino, and parties at City Hall. Open your mind and broaden your horizons.

    2. No Anonymous! People from Chester appreciate honesty about how they are portrayed by others. If Ethel Waters is not being portrayed properly, why should people anywhere go see it. The play should have been debuted in Chester before they took it on the road. They are not going to pass on anything to the people of Chester and expect them to accept it. They would have been better off having them approve it before shoving it down their throats. Good review of a play slapped together and strung along with music.

    1. Then by all means read a book, and maybe just maybe you can learn to appreciate the differences in people's opinions, likes, and dislikes and then maybe you could stop hiding behind Anonymous....

    2. So much for defending the good people of Chester...some opinion.
