City Government is a Family Affair

Nepotism: The practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, esp. by giving them jobs.
When Mayor Linder said he was going to find the best qualified people to fill city jobs, he should have said, the best qualified family members to fill city jobs.
I don’t know all the family connections, but I sure get a lot of email telling me that “he’s a nephew, she’s a daughter-in-law, he’s a son-in-law, he’s her son,” etc.
I’m no political expert or historian, but I’m sure someone will tell me that nepotism has occurred in city politics forever.
Since it’s too much for a poll, please answer these questions:
  1. Tell me how do you feel about the practice of nepotism?
  2. How does nepotism help city government?
  3. Why should this practice be allowed to continue?

  1. The city government is not a family Affair.
You are only mad because Mayor Linder didn't pick you to fill his council seat.

    1. I've got real issues going on in my life and not being a city councilman in that adminstration isn't one of them.

Lynn Eisenhans may have me mad, but not John Linder.

And, there are no family appointements in city government.

      Please excuse the inference.

  2. And here I thought Chester finally beat the Nacrelli reign. Appears that it just goes under a different party/moniker nowadays.

  4. 1. Yes there is serious nepotism going on over there.
2.No! Nepotism does not help the city if the Family, Friends...etc are not qualified for the job.
    3. Yes, if the people being hired just there because the are related to the Mayor or the State Rep. and have no experience, then yes it should be stoppped!!
and to both Anonymous' why do you automatically attack...this is a fair question, like someone and believing the are effective in their positions are to different things, you can like even admire someone and still see the truth...I like certain people in city government, but I don't always and sometimes never agree with what they have doen or doing over there, but I vote so I can speak...

  5. What I would want to know is how many of the people "appointed" to these positions were actually qualified? Were the positions posted? This seems like more political games being played...getting a position because of political favors without qualifications just makes for more of the same failures that Chester is known for in the past. You would have thought that the positions would have been posted so the most qualified person could interview and earn it to make positive change in the city...just more BS!

  6. NEW CHESTER WROTE;THIS WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR JOHN TO MAKE ONE OF THE MOST PROFOUND IMPACTS IN OUR CITIES HISTORY,AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO STOP NEPOTISM AND FAVORTISM,AND GET THE MOST QUILIFIED PEOPLE TO FILL THESE POSITIONS,NO MATTER WHAT PARTY AFFILIATIONS;AND YES TO ANONYMOUS-IF JOHN WOULD HAVE PICKED STAFAN ROOTS FOR CITY COUNCIL,IT WOULD HAVE SHOWED HE HAD SOME CHARACTER,HE IS KNOWLEDGEABLE,EDUCATED AND HAS A VESTED INTEREST IN THE WELFARE OF OUR COMMUNITY,INSTEAD OF CHOOSING A AMBULANCE CHASER,WITH NO ROOTS IN CHESTER

  8. Seem to me there are a lot of haters in and around Chester who are like crabs in a barrell. If it's not me who is getting the breaks/jobs the ones who are getting them shouldn't have a chance to prove themselves. Let's not be so critical of others if we haven't tried to make a difference in the world today ourselves. It's easy to stand on the sideline and say what need to be done. Everyone deserves a chance. I continue to read about this administration is no better than the last administartion, same old polices. How can a man change an entire city in less than a month. You sound like the conserverities, the president hasn't created enoough jobs. How can he create in three years what was destroyed in eight years.

Let's give the new Mayor a chance before we throw him under the bus. Consider running for a position yourself in the next election and see how well you do.

    2. I no that Mr. Warren was hired on his qualifications and he was fired because he supported Mayor Butler? His job was given to linders cousin Charles. Is that fair? Tell me a time when that was done with Mayor Butler? The crabs in a barrel was against Butler also. It's a shame when the people cry that the only way to get a job was to be republican and then when Linder does the same thing we clap our hands and support him. Wrong is wrong no matter who does it. That's why this city will never progress we are to busy fighting against each other. John stated he was the educated choice his decision making has to be questioned. He fired Mr. Payne on Thursday Jan 12 then two hours later asked him if he wanted his job back. Then he fired him on Feb 6th. He got rid of Cory Long then lest than a week later asked him to come back. He made a 100,000.00 dollar mistake with the library funds. He asked Tom Moore Butlers chief of staff to stay on to be a consultant. In this past month Linder has been a mess and if Mayor Butler would have demoted a BLACK CHIEF of POLICE for a white guy who people say is racist this city would be all over him. Chester will reap what it sow's with this administration.

  9. A lot of comments. Only one answer to the questions. You won't be graded. It's not a pass/fail. Are the questions too hard?

  10. Like I said before if the people being appointed aren't qualified then nepotism should be stopped!!!, I agree with 1 of the anonymous' that Mayor Linder could have done something different and looked for the most qualified people t help turn this city around, I also agree with the other anonymous we do need to work with our Mayor...no matter what party they are...but like Stefan said there was only one answer to his questions...and No, Stefan the questions were not hard they were fairly easy...but the people in this city need to step up and fight for whats right instead of arguing over everything...and FYI disagreeing with they way the city is being ran and/or decisions being made does not mean you don't support the mayor it means you think independantly...unlike most people in this city, whoo think just because he is a dem, he will always do the right thing, not saying he hasn't done the right thing...but there is another dem who have been in office for a lifetime, and doesn't have a realiable record to stand n and because he is a dem the people in this city keepd blindly voting for him...or they don't vote at all and well you know the rest and if you don't start paying attention and asking questions....

  11. when the republican party took the city over from the other democrats they did not fire people that have been on the job. i am never going to vote locally again,as a matter of fact i can not wait to sell my house and move. i am tired of this back and fourth. it seems that kirkland is running things, i remember during the obama election when linder was running for office he did not think it was important to support him.
i am disapointed in linder. they went thru city hall with a vengence. they are so busy giving jobs to people he owe favors they forgot about the trouble of our city . this is good bye to a city i love.

  12. SEEMS LIKE NEPOTISM IS TAKING PLACE @ CITY HALL & KIRKLAND FAMILY IS EVERYWHERE...MAKES U WONDER IF ITS MYOR LINDER OR MAAYOR KIRKLND. IF THESE FAMILY MEMBERS ARE QUALIFIED FOR THE POSITIONS, SO BE IT BUT IF NOT THEN THATS A PROBLEM...THESE POSITIONS WERE NOT POSTED WHICH I MYSELF PERSONALLY THOUGHT THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN..THERE WERE NO OPPORTUNITY FOR FORMER EMPLOYEES OR CITY RESIDENTS TO APPLY..GUESS IT WAS ALL FIGURED OUT UPON HIS ELECTION AAS MAYOR.I JUST WONDER IF THESE PEOPLE IN THESE DIRECTOR POSITIONS ARE QUALIFIED..JUST BECAUSE YOU WENT TO COLLEGE FOR 4 YEARS DONT MEAN YOU'RE QUALIFIED TO OR READY TO TAKE ON SUCH IMPORTANT POSITIONS..EXPERIENCE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN THE CLASS ROOM...I'M JUS SAYING THIS CITY IS IN TROUBLE AND THATS WHAT NEED TO BE THE FOCUS CITY HALL...IT'S EARLY I'LL JUST WAIT IT OUT AND SEE HOW THINGS GO...MAYOR LINDER I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST AN AS FAR AS KIRKLAND, I THINK YOU NEED TO PUT HIM IN HIS LANE AND REMIND HIM THAT YOU ARE THE MAYOR FOR THE CITY OF CHESTER

  13. Kirkland has been fight against the republicans for 20plus years and the first person Linder thank and said that he was the point guard of the party (leader) was Kirkland. Why wouldn't anyone think Thad wasn't going to be the person running the city? Darrell Jones did nothing as the president of the NAACP but now he is the deputy director of parks they got rid of Keisha Blackwell and she has experience and graduated from Penn State with a degree in agriculture. That move was not for the best interest of the city.

  15. Sice Linder is cleaning house, he should next look at the Fire Dept. Those 2 Republican Appointees of Pileggi should be first to go. Neither EARNED the positions
they hold, one was a good ticket seller, personal friend and snitch, the other is probaly the best BSer in the city, was appointed to every position by the Republicans from Lt. to Capt. Batt Chief, Deputy Comm and now Comm. Same guy Pileggi had run against Kirkland for State Rep. Linder better watch his back, the MOLES are all around him and he does'nt even know it. Like i said the best BSer in the City.
