For the sake of our school district, we do need taxes raised. State gov't officials know it too which is terrible. Just a terrible conundrum. And its crazy b/c that was a selling point for mayor Butler while campaigning. I also heard mayor Linder say he wouldn't raise taxes either. Something's got to give. PA officials won't keep doing what they will inevitably have to do for the school district this year.
Who will be left to pay them? Only home oners pay now most of us don't have children in school. My suggestion is to tax everyone there are just not enough homeoweners to foot the bills. The do this in the county seat!
I'm not sure that the folks in Chester and some other areas even realize that school districts are primarily funded by real estate taxes. I've read the articles and comments and it's amazing that Chester residents question why the same situation is not happening in Wallingford-Swarthmore,Penn-Delco and other surounding districts. They actually state that it's because those districts are "white." The surrounding districts are not in the same boat because the residents who live there pay their taxes. Maybe if the majority of residents of Chester paid their taxes, the school district would not be such a damn mess. The give me, give me, I'm entitled attitude has got to stop. There are so many great people in Chester and parents who truly care about their children. It's the ones who believe they are owed who have ruined it for everybody. I'd also like to know why there are thousands of dollars in delinquent taxes and nothing has been done about it.
If I may clear up a matter. Real estate taxes are paid by property owners for city and county maintainance and services. School taxes are what keeps schools afloat. Home and property owners are the only ones who pay these taxes. The problem is; Chester has more renters( projects, apt. section 8, group housing) than it's surrounding communities. Over 65% of the people in Chester are non RE/Sch. tax payers, hence limited revenue for schools.
Raise the property taxes on those that have children in school only and go after the dead beats who are behind in their taxes. Find out what happened to the millions of school funds that are missing and fire the ones that were responsible.
