Takoma Park, MD – “It is important to recognize,” said Mayor Wendell Butler, “the highly successful women and men the Chester schools produced. Thank you, Dr. Carter-Williams (Isabella) for a book of poetry that honors our past and has high expectations for our future!”
Mayor Butler attended the Soul of Isabella Reading and Signing held at the Chester’s J. Lewis Crozer Library on Tuesday, April 26. A vibrant group of Chester residents turned out to applaud Dr. Mary Carter-Williams and to enjoy poems that reminded them of the core values that made Chester a revolutionary city early on in its history. Poems such as West Mary Street, Tomato Run. May Day and The Fisherman, said one participant, remind us that strong families, caring communities, neighborhood schools fully supported by their communities, a thriving economy, and churches that serve as extended families are deeply rooted in our heritage as a city. Values Councilman John Linder said that we should vigorously and vociferously subscribe to at all times because “What Chester Makes Makes Chester”.
Dr. Carter-Williams is one of 36 poets featured in Inspired Results, Poets and Artists of Takoma Park, Maryland. She has participated in the DC Commission of the Arts’ PIP program and the Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission’s Poetry Series. An award-winning poet, Dr. Carter-Williams has a baccalaureate degree from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and graduate degrees from Howard University and The Catholic University of America.
