City seeks nominations for Mayor's 6th Annual Scholar Awards



The City is still currently seeking nominations for the Mayor’s 6th Annual Scholars Awards taking place on June 30, 2011.  Each year, this festive occasion is held to recognize the academic achievements, community service and/or college acceptance of students in grades 8-12 who reside in the City of Chester.

Please see attached to the apply. Applications are also available at Chester City Hall, 1 Fourth Street, between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:30 pm.  All applications must be completed in full and returned to City Hall, no later than Friday, June 3, 2011.

Mayor’s 6th Annual Scholars Awards 
“Recognizing Academic Excellence, Community Service, and Collegiate Attainment”

PURPOSE, AWARD CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA
The purpose of this free awards event is to recognize the stellar achievements of our local Chester students (8th-12th graders) within distinct award categories. To qualify for the award, students, 8th-11th must be a Chester resident and meet criteria 1, 2, & 3; seniors must meet all criteria. Please carefully read through all of the criteria.
1. Academic Honors... Grade Point Average: 3.0 (or higher), three consecutive quarters. 
2. Community Service... Proven outstanding service in the community, school, etc. 
3. Letter of Recommendation...Written, personalized recommendation letter from teacher, guidance counselor, community leader, mentor, etc.

For High School Seniors Only
4. College Acceptance...Proven acceptance into a 2 or 4 year college/university, for fall 2011. 
5. Essay...Written 1-page essay (500 word count max) on the most influential person in your life, and why.

Students and parents will be invited to a festive awards ceremony giving recognition and positive encouragement to the City’s youth. Honorees will enjoy a buffet dinner along with encouraging remarks from a keynote speaker, and each award recipient will receive a personalized certificate from Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr. In order for students to be recognized for this awards celebration, they must be a Chester resident, submit a fully completed Awards Application and meet all of the specified criteria.
