I thought I was going to see Bill Burr in Atlantic City and was surprised to learn that my birthday gift was a Chrisette Michele concert at the Keswick last night.
Chrisette is relatively new and off to a fast start with her 3rd CD being released last month. I loved the first one, liked the 2nd one, and enjoying the 3rd with only a few listens under my belt.
She’s opened for a lot of acts and I was curious how she’d carry her own show.
Wonder no more. She’s a true talent.
Lately, the best female performer I’ve seen is Ledisi, but she’s been troubled with bad sound the last few times I’ve seen her. I think she’s bringing too much to the stage. However, Chrisette kept it simple with only four musicians and two amazing backup singers, and the sound was right on point.
And that voice. She takes a back seat to no one.
She didn’t sing all my favorite songs, but the songs she sang became my favorites. Her style pulled me right into her songs as if I knew them all along.
Somehow, the audience let her walk off stage without requesting an encore. It was only 9:45pm and I know she would have come back out. Historically, Philly R&B crowds get up and leave like the last bus is waiting outside. I’ve never understood this practice.
If you ever get a chance to see Chrisette Michelle do her own show, don’t miss it.
