In celebration of Black History Month during February, “Enslavement To Enlightment” a new exhibit at the Delawre County Historical Society Museum, 408 Avenue of the States in Chester, will open with a free gala celebration from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6. The public is welcome.
The event will focus on artist Van Buren Payne’s story and Twyla Simpkins, who was born and raised in Chester and has collected personal treasures reflecting her life and experiences as a child growing up in Chester, through her years as a student at Chester High School and college as well as her many years teaching in the Chester High School. Twyla still maintains her leading role in the community by heading the reawakening and restructuring of the Chester YWCA today. She, too, will join the celebration and share her insights about each and every treasure she has collected.
