In 1958, Martin Luther King was stabbed in the chest while at a book signing in New York City.
The attacker was later determined to be insane, and was not influenced by any political or personal issues.
When interviewed during his recovery, King said these words.
“The pathetic aspect of this experience is not the injury to one individual, it demonstrates that a current of hatred and bitterness so permeates areas of our nation that eventually deeds of extreme violence must erupt.”
