Chester, Pa.—Widener University received further accolades this week as Newsweek magazine named the university among the top service-minded colleges and universities in the nation. Widener and Bryn Mawr College were the only two institutions in Pennsylvania on the list.
Newsweek partnered with Washington Monthly to rank the best schools for do-gooders. Last month, Washington Monthly released its annual rankings of the colleges and universities that do the most for the nation. Widener ranked fifth among national universities in the service category and 56th overall. The Newsweek rankings, however, combine public institutions and private liberal arts schools for its service category, placing Widener seventh in the nation.
Widener President James T. Harris III said he is pleased that more national publications are recognizing the contributions that colleges and universities make to their communities and to the nation.
“Widener focuses on how we can prepare students to serve our communities and our nation,” Harris said. “We believe that is the true measure of the success of an institution.”
Using Washington Monthly’s criteria, Newsweek ranked schools based on the number of alumni who serve in the Peace Corps, the percentage of students in ROTC, the percentage of federal work-study money that goes to community service, the number of students participating in community service and the number of service hours performed, and the school’s rank on a combined measure of the number of staff supporting community service, the number of academic courses that incorporate service, and whether the institution provides scholarships for community service.
Widener University has ranked among the top 100 institutions in the annual Washington Monthly rankings since the magazine’s inaugural college issue in 2005. In addition, Widener was among the first universities in the nation to be categorized as a “community engagement” institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2006. Widener has also consistently been named to the annual President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Maybe Widener will finally look good on my resume.
ReplyDeleteGive me a break, Widener always looks good on your resume!
ReplyDeleteFunny! Says President Harris?
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you mentioned that Widener always looks good on resumes. For some time I thought that my degree was only good for use in the latrine. I am glad the value of the degree has increased along with the cost of the school.
ReplyDeleteNo, says an employee who has been here a lot longer than JTH and who has seen Widener change over the years - for the better. If you dislike it so much then leave. I am sick and tired of people constantly and consistently insulting WU. Whether people live in the community and feel that Widener doesn't give them enough handouts, or work at WU (like yourself) and feel that WU is a big stain on their resume, I'm sick and tired of it. Like I said, you dislike it so much then leave. And if you've already left, good riddance.
ReplyDeleteNot a Widener employee but it is great that you are. You should take advantage of those free classes that comes with the benefit of working there. If you are going to be a spokes person, you really need to consult them.
ReplyDeleteSo what was wrong with my last posting? Where is it. I was nice.
ReplyDeleteWidener is amazing. If it is seen as a "stain" on one's resume, it is likely because of that individuals poor GPA.
ReplyDeleteThere should really be a limit to how far you can go back to comment. This is ridiculous. We got the point by now. A day late, a dollar short?
ReplyDeleteWhat should the limit be?
ReplyDeleteIDK!!! It's your blog. I was just making a comment. I'm not really stressing over the GPA comment since I have a 4.0 from Widener. I'm just saying maybe anonymous can comment on your most recent Widener postings. There is a lot of new postings on Widener. Stay Current!!!
ReplyDeleteOh.
