Baltimore, MD – Maryland State Labor, Community, Education, Civil and Equal Rights leaders are gathering on September 2nd to demand that we put America back to work and pull America back together. Organizers believe that we all deserve a just and fair chance to achieve the American Dream. The kick off will articulate local efforts to mobilize Marylanders to attend the “One Nation Working Together” March on October 2nd in our nation’s capital.
Nationally, One Nation Working Together (ONWT) is a coalition of more than 170 human and civil rights organizations, unemployed workers’, environmental, ethnic, labor, peace, youth, student and faith-based organizations that are bringing hundreds of thousands to Washington, D.C. on October 2 to demand real change.
“Building the One Nation Working Together movement is about a better future where we create good jobs with equity for all, and an economy that works for all,” said Maryland ONWT Steering Committee Chair and President of the Maryland State & D.C. AFL-CIO, Fred Mason. “One Nation takes on the great challenges we face as a nation, educating our children in safe schools and safe communities, transforming how we use energy, and providing for an economic future built on the principles that all freedom loving people aspire to achieve- prosperity, liberty, and justice for all.”
“We face serious challenges: a deepening jobs crisis caused in part by a bubble economy of low wages and exploitative credit; employment discrimination and a broken immigration system; crumbling infrastructure and failing public education systems; and environmental catastrophes,” said Gerald Stansbury, president of the NAACP Maryland State Conference.
“Too many voices offer only a choice between doing nothing and turning against each other. Today, more than ever, we need decisive leadership and a committed public to advance inclusive solutions that will overcome these challenges.”
In hopes of charting a bold, pragmatic path toward a more unified, sustainable, prosperous future, the Maryland ONWT Steering Committee and their supporters are coming together this Thursday, September 2nd.
