I Don't Even Like John Legend

...but I just listened to his new CD, Wake Up!

Talk about an artist reinventing himself. To me, he writes great songs, sings a few of them well, but on this CD his voice is paired with the music perfectly. Most of the songs are covers with luscious arrangements. He definitely made this one for adults with a ear for old school.

See John Legend and the Roots perform this CD live in concert on YouTube. Filmed by Spike Lee and sponsored by American Express, they know a great thing when they see it.

  1. I like the song too. I heard it in the car this week and said huh. I actually paid attention to him. I got to get it. Honestly, it is good.

  2. I hate buying CDs. It is usually one good song on it. Legend does have a few good songs but I would have preferred just to hear him alone on the Wake Up song. He does not need Common and The Roots to help him sell his CD. I don't know why some artists feel they need to add rap. They don't need to cater to everyone.

  3. Obviously u have not listened to the CD. There is hardly any rap on it. THE ROOTS is the most exciting live band on the scene. Legend needed to get off the piano and THE ROOTS needed his star appeal. It's a perfect match especially for the listener.

  4. I have the CD and I listened to all the tracks. Legend does not need any gimmicks like THE ROOTS to do his thing. You are right. Legend does have star appeal without them. That's the point.

  5. We just have different taste. What you call a gimmick, I call a fresh approach to good music.

  6. Yeah but Stef, you make it sound like I don't have good taste in music. I do, thank you very much. What's wrong with me just listening to Legend without all that other crap. I like his music. Just because The Roots have the same last name as you do, doesn't mean you have to like them. I haven't gotten into The Roots yet. Give me some time. I will check them out. Okay.

  7. Just because it's your blog to post whatever you want doesn't make you right! Be a good sport and behave!

  8. Different taste don't mean bad taste. As the post is titled...I don't like John Legend. Maybe I'm the one with bad taste.

  9. No. You know better than that. You know we have more in common than not.
