Does a frank discussion on race make a person racist?
The Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team owner wants to think he had a racist moment a couple years ago. I don't know if I agree with him.
After hearing the email read over the radio, I was wondering what part of it was racist. My plan was to write a post on the email and offer my opinion.
In my web search for a transcript of the Levenson email, I stumbled on Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s piece written for Time Magazine titled ‘Bruce Levenson Isn’t a Racist; He’s a Businessman’.
After reading Kareem’s article, it was obvious I could save a lot of time and effort by simply providing a link to it HERE since we share much of the same opinion.
What’s your opinion?
In my opinion, Levenson believes his life would have been much easier if he was selling more season tickets and this is why he wrote his email. But, the nature of black folks is to not do too much buying in advance. We'll stand in the long game day line to buy a ticket and aren't too keen about tying our money up in a season ticket package.
Levenson needs to learn black economics and how to market to them. If you compare the crowd that comes to Hawks games to the crowd at Atlanta Braves games, the Hawks draws much better. The white crowds that usually support baseball embarrass Atlanta by their lack of support. Yet, when I watch a Hawks game, the seats are full.
Somebody tell Levenson he's got a good thing going with those black folks in Atlanta. Stop trying to whiten it up. He'll only destroy a good thing.
Interesting Levenson didn't mention whitening up the players on the team. If he want get the whites to attend maybe he should hire some more white players and see how many seats are occupied by whites. Nothing has changed, the players are what draw the crowds as long as they are winning.

Give me this team: Kevin Love, David Lee, Ryan Anderson, Steve Novak, Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, Luke Ridnour, JJ Redick, Steve Blake, Mike Miller, Chris Birdman Andersen, and throw in Jeremy Lin for diversity. They would be fun to watch.
DeleteHow could I forget Kyle Korver?
Deletemr slave your team will come in last place
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right. But the Atlanta owner would have his wish.
