Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Will Start At The Chester Boys & Girls Club and Celebrate City-Wide on Jan. 20
January 10, 2014 (Chester, PA) – The MLK Commemorative Committee of Chester & Vicinity invites families and individuals of all ages to attend the day of service activities on Jan. 20 that recognize Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme for this year’s day of service is “Pieces of Peace.”
A free continental breakfast and light lunch will be available for those who participate in the day of service activities.
In addition to the Boys & Girls Club, local organizations and businesses have volunteered to do service projects at the STEM Academy at Showalter High School, 1100 W. 10th St., Chester, a school within the Chester-Upland School District. From 9:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., high school students, college students and local business leaders will work together to paint areas within the school and update bulletin boards. All volunteers are asked to pre-register by sending an email to aubrey.proud@crozer.org prior to Jan. 20, and to report to the Boys & Girls Club at 9 a.m. on Jan. 20.
Following the morning schedule, the day of service activities will move to Crozer-Chester Medical Center at 1 p.m. for a ceremonial wreath-laying in front of the Old Main building, where Dr. King studied when he was in the Crozer Theological Seminary. The afternoon activities will conclude with an event at Crozer’s Clark Auditorium at 2 p.m. featuring a presentation from Rev. Dr. Clifford Johnson of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Wilmington, Del. and his church choir. These events are open to the public.
During the evening of Jan. 20, all are invited to participate in Widener’s annual commemoration of Dr. King’s life sponsored by the Black Student Union at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium. The program will celebrate the significance of Dr. King’s life and work, and honor the memory of Nelson Mandela.
