The Clippers (6-2) had their 32 game Del Val League win streak snapped in the packed Shoebox on Essex Ave, 65-56 at the hands of the Penn Wood Patriots (8-1). Despite a nine point first quarter by Tyrel Sturdivant, Chester trailed 16-20 at the end of the first quarter.
Sophomore Jahmi Bailey scored the first 5 points (his only points of the game) of the 3rd quarter and Chester was within three 32-35. But once again Chester's perimeter defense fell short and the Patriots knocked down set-shot after set-shot to push their advantage to 11 points to end the third, Chester - 41, Penn Wood - 52.
Sophomore Khaleeq Campbell came off the bench in the fourth for pressure defense which resulted in his three steals and five points but it was not enough. Even with the Patriots going 2 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth, the Clippers shooting matched the frigid temperature outside the Shoe Box.
Chester did manage to get three players in double digits led by Sturdivant's 16, Conrad Chambers added 14 and Mahir Johnson contributed 10. In addition to the 5 points apiece from Bailey and Campbell, Gabe Adesina added four and Keyonte Watkins completed the scoring with 2. Junior forward Maurice Henry came off the bench and added his name to the stat sheet with two blocks and three rebounds.
Chester will finally return home to the Clip Joint this Saturday, January 11th for an afternoon affair with the Harrisburg Cougars come to visit. The JV game tips off at 2:30 with the Varsity to follow about 4:00.
