Are Chester-Upland grads delusional?

Chester's reputation is defined by its crime, its schools, and it's basketball program. Two out of three are bad.

When the Philadelphia Inquirer publishes an article titled  'For Chester Upland grads, bad state rap doesn't define them', it makes me wonder who they think they're fooling.

A few quotes:
This month, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale released the audit stating that the Delaware County district was in disarray" and offered "limited hope for the future of its students."
Chester has long been troubled by problems such as crime, drugs, and poverty that impact neighborhoods and students in the district, said graduate Marshall Strand, 18.
The public image of Chester High School is of two extremes: fights or basketball championships.
"People come [to work] here and say, 'You kids deserve a better education,' and then you look up and they're gone," said Kameron Staples, Chester High School's valedictorian and a recipient of a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation scholarship. Staples will attend Brown University in the fall.

  1. Not exactly a comment but relates to the black community getting ahead. Does anyone have anything to say about all of the jobs that will continue to be lost by the black community to all of the illegals soon to be legal? Where is the community leadership on this...seems they are silent and not ruffling any Democratic feathers.

    1. You don't have to be a grad to submit an answer. This is the Chester City Blog, not the Stefan Roots Blog.

But, since you asked, I think the students who are trying to further their education understand the bad state rap a Chester-Upland education carries, especially among local college who are familiar with Chester High.

So yes, it does define them. To think otherwise is delusional.

However, the students who will prove the label wrong will do so by succeeding at the next level. Only then can they say with surety that the Chester-Upland past didn't haunt them as they succeeded despite the odds against them.

We just don't have enough of them.

  3. I think we have plenty of kids that prove this theory wrong, they just don't sell papers, and they have never been a part of the political system here, so they find success in other places! what our kids lack is exposure to the world. Once we get them to understand this global economy and the global competition for jobs and education here, they can make better decisions. As for illegals taking jobs from Chester Residents, what jobs might that be?

    1. With the poor education there getting from CUSD, the low wage jobs. They will have to compete with the illegals for work.

  4. You would take the rare occasion of a optimistic news article and be critical of it.
