Former Philadelphia Eagles’ Defensive Tackle Delivers Moving Keynote Address at Chester Community Charter School Sports Banquet

Recently, Chester Community Charter School, the largest K-8 charter school in Pennsylvania, held its annual sports banquet, which honored more than 50 student-athletes of its basketball, baseball, and cheerleading teams, and coaching staff. Hollis Thomas, former Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive tackle, current radio personality on Sportsradio 94.1 WIP, and defensive line coach of the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul, delivered the keynote address to more than 120 students, parents, faculty and administrators, in attendance.

Thomas told stories about his childhood, growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, and how athletic programs such as the one at Chester Community Charter School, played a huge role in his life. He shared with students negative comments he received growing up, such as “You’re too short to play football!” and encouraged student-athletes to persevere in spite of any negativity they might face in their athletic careers. Thomas advised student-athletes to appreciate their education and look to their parents, guardians, and coaches as a support system.

Remarks were delivered by Dr. David Clark, CEO, Chester Community Charter School, who, during the presentation of trophies and awards, said: “We are very proud to present our students and coaching staff with well-deserved awards. For the students, it takes hard work and dedication to devote time to attend practice while striving towards an outstanding academic record, and that is exactly what Chester Community Charter School’s students achieved this year. For the coaches, we recognize them for giving of their time to instill in our students the importance of outstanding sportsmanship. We also thank them, this evening, for mentoring our athletes, and for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Tonight, we honor both groups for their commitment to each other, and to our school.”
