Chester cares more for Obama than their children

Chester Upland School District Recovery Officer speaking to a bunch of empty chairs

On Tuesday, over 10,000 people came out to vote. On Wednesday, it seems that maybe 10 people came out to hear Chester Upland School District recovery officer Joe Watkins.

I could be wrong, but if President Obama knew how negligent Chester parents are regarding their school aged children, he'd spank you, put you in the corner, and give you a time out.

If a picture tells a thousand words, the photo taken by Daily Times photographer Rob Gurecki says it all. Chester just doesn't care about their children.

According to the paper, Joe Watson came out talking that same smack as before that the district has to win back many of the students that have fled the district in favor of charter schools, when, in fact, it was his boss who helped approve the latest charter school in Chester that the CUSD board voted against.

Watkins goes on to imply that teachers will be bought out, class size increased, and schools closed. He also started waving a magic wand when he mentions that endowments and private funds will appear that will support technology courses, music instruction, foreign language courses, and daycare.

A lot of these kids can't even read and write on grade level. Can we at least start there?

You can celebrate the fact that you voted for President Obama but if you want to help the president, please do what you are supposed to do to by helping your children get a good education.

President Obama will not be coming to Chester to fix the schools. He's left a few things for you to do.

    1. Private schools out perform the majority of public school system. If you can afford to pay tuition, that's the way to go.

The issue here is public vs charter. His mention of private schools is just noise.

  2. Title is your opinion but may not be true. I for one do not attend these meetings since my kids attend private schools.

    1. That's good. You wouldn't be expected to attend. If the title may not be true, how do you explain the empty chairs?

  3. Parents are smart enough to know that Harrisburg has already made a decision on what they will do. The meetings are just "Noise". Can't say we didn't give you all a chance.

    2. The only dumb person there was you because you don't know what's happening.

    3. Help me. What is happening? I want to be smart like you.

    4. I bet you do! Sorry no chance of that happening. You will get the information when everyone does from the delcotimes. It's easy just supply the link as usual.

    5. And there explains our problem. We'd rather pay $1 everyday to read the Daily Times account of our stories than share our information with each other.

I don't have a choice but to link to them because Chester organizations only inform the Daily Times or their meetings and events. They don't want anyone else to cover them.

The fact that you even read this blog implies you are looking for an alternative view. You can also contribute your view to help us understand what's going on.

Or, you may just come here to complain.

  6. while the numbers may be low, the picture is not accurate. There were at least twelve of us sitting at a table in the back, and folks sitting out of camara view in additional seats. My count was 30. The sad part is none of us have school age kids in the district, but understand that if the district collapses, so will this community. There is a core group that will work with Mr. Watkins and the Elected School Board to get our kids a 21st century education, or die trying. Will will not sit idle and do nothing!

    1. Thank you. I had hoped there were more people there than the photo showed. Amazing what message that photo tells without your comment.

  7. I love these types of spins on a story. I don't think people realize it when they are passionate about one cause over another. Especially when the outcome and effort is immediate vs long term.

I wouldn't say school board meeting attendance is an issue related solely to Chester but I can only hope that their are more parents in the district that want a quality future for their children than actually showed up.

    1. My hope is that Comcast would insist that when they give communities free access channels that the community must broadcast City Council meetings and School Board meetings or else they take the stations away.

Why can't Chester view these meetings on TV like they do in just about every other community? It's must see TV everywhere else but here.

Folks my not come out to these meetings but they certainly should have an opportunity to see what's going on.

    2. For people who want to see School Board meetings and City Council meetings, I've offered this suggestion on more than one occasion.

      1. Identify 25 Comcast subscribers
      2. Send the Comcast CEO a letter that all of you will drop Comcast if they don't insist that the meetings are aired on the public access channel.
      3. If you don't get a response, find 25 more, and 25 more subscribers. They'll eventually respond by either putting pressure on the school district and city or giving you free HBO and Internet to shut up.

Or, a bunch of you could ask the school district and city hall to air the meetings. I don't think anyone other than me has asked. I never got an answer.

  8. Why don't we see much change in this community? Just asking.

I don't know when this meeting was or wat time or how long but did it occur to anyone some of the good ppl of Chester was working-- former Chester resident mother
