Mayor John Linder and City Council make graduation night memorable

Hon. Mayor John Linder and City Council, along with the diligent works of their respective department staff created the celebratory atmosphere especially designated for the families and graduates of Chester High School’s Class of 2012.
Ethel Waters Park was full of family, friends, and graduates on Friday June 8th, for the city sponsored official graduate party for the 138th graduating class of Chester High School, following commencement ceremonies. Several city officials were in attendance to enjoy the food and DJ service provided by the city under a clear sky including, Mayor John Linder, State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland, City Council and Staff of the State Representative. Chester City Police Commissioner Joseph Bail Jr. led a vigilant staff in securing a violence free evening for all extending beyond Ethel Waters, for residents to enjoy.
“Chester City, Chester Township, and Upland Police Departments in conjunction with the Chester Housing Authority did a truly outstanding job in making the night possible for the city youth to have a safe and fun environment to celebrate with their families and friends.” remarked Commissioner Bail.
“My Councilpersons’ Department Staff have gone above and beyond in preparation for tonight. It shows, and I know they were the most pleased with the smiles on the kids’ faces [tonight], especially Councilwoman Liz Williams’ Parks & Rec. Department. Certainly the kids deserved it for a goal completed and a job well done!” Mayor Linder added.

  1. Come on PEOPLE. Former Councilwoman Marrea Walker Smith started this tridition 3 years ago. Dont act like this is the Brianchild of Liz Williams. I bet you everything this adminstration does is the same thing Councilwoman Walker Smith and Brian Warren started. Next they gonna say they started Movie in the Parks or Fourth of July concerts. SMH

  2. Your so right, they have been doing that for a while and Chief Alston and his staff did a great job with security. Liz or Charles be creative start something new in the recreation department.
What is the city doing this summer for the kids? My daughter did something every week for free with the city last summer, Movies, Ice Skating, Roller Skating, Camps. Are they having a football camp or basketball camp? What happen to the brochures that the rec department had that had everything on them for the summer? Where can I find out information about the 4th of July?

  3. Wow!!!!! Something positive and refreshing and we still manage to bring negativity into it. If this "tridition" hadn't been continued you would have found a way to bash the administration about why it was ended. Stop complaining for once in our lives and get behind a cause and work for it, support it! Keep up the good work and let's do more to bring positive light onto this city, then maybe major institutions, industries, organizations, and sports franchises wouldn't mind being associated with Chester.

  4. I am a supporter of Councilwoman Walker Smith and I was at a lot of there event and NEVER saw The DEMOCRATS there to support all of the positive events they were doing for our youth and to see them do the same programs is a slap in the face to them. Whhere is the bright new ideas? They have done the exact same programs and you are giving them credit and praise don't understand.

    1. Not sure who the 'you' is that you are referring to.

This post is from a press release sent from the Mayor's office.

  5. That was nice! After a school year overflowed with uncertainty for the students, I don't think it matters to them who's idea it was or who kept the tradition going. I think it was a great idea by the previous administration to start the event and a good idea by the present administration to continue the event.

  6. Unfortunately some folks will never be satisfied. The traditional Citywide Graduation celebration was started more than 10 years ago by the NAACP during the Cora Lee Dixon era down on the water front. Councilwoman Williams, John & Delores Shelton, Rev. Rocky Brown, Wendell Butler, State Rep. Kirkland, Democrats & Republicans collaborated back then. Before we started allowing outsiders to divide and conquer our community. Check your history. Some could say that Mrs. Walker borrowed the original idea from the NAACP. Who cares. It does NOT matter where the idea generated as long as the students were safe and had fun. It's about the students' and celebrating their accomplishments. "We" are our own worst enemies.

  7. Unfortunately some folks will never be satisfied. The City Wide Graduation celebration started more than 10 years ago on the waterfront (PPL Stadium area) by the NAACP, State Rep. Kirkland, Grass Roots Advocates & City officials more than 10 years ago. Councilwoman Liz Williams, John & Delores Shelton, Rev. Rocky Brown, Cora Lee Dixon, Darryl Jones, State Rep. Kirkland, then Mayor Bohannon Sheppard and many others. One could say that Mrs. Walker borrowed the idea from them. But it really does NOT matter. What matters is that the tradition continued, the Graduates were rewarded for their accomplishments with a fun and safe outlet.

  8. I have an agenda bc like you stated we should unite as a community. I lost a cousin 2 years ago and I became very active with Marrea and I saw recreation and anti violence do a lot of GOOD things in this city. I SAW NO DEMOCRATES at any of those events. Now everyone is saying unity lets work together.

  9. Anonymous, we have something in common. I lost 2 cousins as well...Summer of 2010. I have 2 cousins in jail for wanting to retaliate for the death of them. I was active in the community before the deaths. Some people choose to serve the community behind the scenes and not advertise what they do for the community. Agenda's should be about the people. Not a PARTY. Every Party should be about the people. When my cousins died both Democrats and Republicans reached out to my family. Marrea didn't reach out but we didn't take it personal. Sometimes the politicians get overwhelmed with the drama too or maybe she wasn't available. I don't have any bad feelings towards her. However, the people voted for the current administration and there is nothing you or I can do about it. You can choose to stay stuck in what was or move into what is. The Democrats have only been in office 6 months, maybe you should try working with them, if your agenda is for ALL people. I'm sure Marrea has moved on. Violence has been around since Biblical times. What's happening in Chester is happening in cities across the country. It's not going to stop anytime soon. Sounds harsh but its true. Anti violence begins with Mothers and Fathers raising their children properly. People were saying let's work together when the last administration was in office. At some point I hope we answer the call and begin to truly work together. United we stand divided we fall.
