Hon. Mayor John Linder and City Council along with their respective department directors will be on site at the Chester City Memorial Park Municipal Pool Friday June 29th at 2:30 for the sign presentation inaugurating the ‘Young Lungs at Play’ Campaign and recently adopted ordinance.
The City of Chester recently amended a parks and recreation ordinance banning all tobacco-use “within 50 feet of all public playgrounds, swimming pools, or any court used for basketball or tennis, or any field used for baseball, football, or soccer in the parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers within the city.”
The no cost, tobacco-free program is supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and funded through a grant from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administered by the Health Promotion Council (HPC).
Delaware County provider, Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems, supported by HPC, is assisting municipalities, organizations, churches, and institutions with technical assistance in order to easily adopt YLAP in their community.
After a few weeks of reviewing the initiative, the city’s Parks Coordinator, Anthony Moore, met with city council. Mayor John Linder and council members passed the ordinance on June 13, 2012. In an effort to create a tobacco-free environment throughout Chester, the city is requesting 75 Young Lungs at Play signs to post in approximately 20 parks within city limits including: Chester Park, Sun Village Park, Memorial Park and other small park and playground areas youth frequent.
The City of Chester will join other Delaware County municipalities and organizations considered “YLAP Champions.”
Existing champions include Upper Darby Township, Upper Darby School District, Swarthmore Borough, Concord Township, Darby Borough, Sharon Hill Borough, Glenolden Borough, Christ Tabernacle Church, Mount Pleasant Nursery and Kindergarten, and Rocky Run YMCA.
Several other municipalities and organizations are in the process of joining the tobacco-free initiative.

Good move. Some may not think much of it, but its a step in the right direction in terms of setting standards in the city.

ReplyDeleteThere's ordinances for seat belts, traffic lights, pubic nuisance, etc. Effectiveness all depends on what's enforced.
ReplyDeleteNo one told the city's pool manager ( AFRICAN AMERICAN THIN LIGHT SKINNED FEMALE)(engle st). She smokes in front of the kids. CHOKED ME WHEN I WALKED THROUGH A FEW MOS AGO.
