A Farm Share, or “Community Supported Agriculture” (CSA) share is a great way for Chester residents to get a steady supply of the freshest fruits and vegetables grown locally and organically, from May until November.
Hillside Farm is located on Elwyn’s campus in Media, on Route 352, and grows forty varieties of vegetables and fruits for its CSA members.
Hillside Farm, a project of the nonprofit organization Greener Partners, is offering low-cost shares to eligible families, and is now accepting SNAP/EBT benefits.
Members can choose to pick up their shares directly at Hillside Farm in Media or at the Booker T. Washington Center on 611 Central Ave. in Chester.
Members must sign up for a share before the season begins, and agree to participate in the entire 6-month season. That means members get to pick up a share of 5-10 freshly harvested vegetables each of the 24 weeks of the growing season from late-May until Thanksgiving.
The vegetable and fruit selection varies by season, offering items such as lettuce, kale, collard greens, and carrots in the spring and fall, and tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and berries in the summer. In addition, members can visit the farm to pick their own fresh herbs, cherry tomatoes, green beans, and more all season long.
Members choose a medium or full-sized share and can receive a $150 discount if they meet income eligibility requirements.
Members may also pay with SNAP/food stamp benefits on a bimonthly payment schedule. For a family that meets the income eligibility requirements and chooses a medium share, the price comes to just $11.50 per week, a 33% discount.
Greener Partners will host a Free Community Meal to meet potential members and talk about the program. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
